Today, The Grocery Outlet still operates under its original name – providing locals with great local finds at amazing prices! In 1927, Joe's Coffeehouse opened on Elm Street in Carbondale and quickly became one of the leading businesses in town. In 1935, Mayor John Fenton opened the State Fairgrounds Cafeteria which soon became an important part of Carbondale's social life. By 1945, many local businesses had closed or been taken over by larger chains such as KFC, Chevrolet dealership, Sears Roebuck & Co., JCPenney stores etc.). However, Jim Belanger still ran Joe's Café for another five years until he sold it to his son Tom in 1951. At Jim Belanger's death in 1957, his café passed from hand-to-hand ownership to its current owners who continue to operate it today under the name "Belanger Bros."
