Airforce Gift History in Carbondale, Illinois began with the enactment of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 1992. The act called for a reorganization of the United States Air Force and directed the secretary of defense to establish an airpower gift history museum. On October 1, 1992, General Michael Hayden was appointed director of the museum. The first airpower gift history display was opened tothe public on November 10, 1992. The goal of this project was to document and celebrate America's air power heritage through exhibitions and education programs. The mission of the Museum has evolved over time to include honoring all aspects of U.S. military aviation including historic aircraft and equipment as well as current operations in support of national security interests around the world. The Museum also endeavors to inspire individuals in their personal relationships with aviation by providing a valuable resource for educational purposes as well as enjoyable visits for those who are interested in learning more about American aviation culture and history.

Carbondale, Illinois is a city located in the central region of the U.S. state of Illinois. The population was 43,873 at the 2010 census, making Carbondale one of the largest cities in Illinois and its third-largest municipality by population after Chicago and Urbana–Champaign. It lies on a bend in the Mississippi River just downstream from St. Louis, Missouri. The site where Carbondale now stands was first settled by French colonists in 1763 as part of La Salle's expedition to explore what would become Lower Illinois Territory. After France abandoned their efforts to establish a permanent settlement there, fur traders and missionaries began arriving in search of land to settle in what is now Illinois around 1810. One such pioneer was John Logan, who purchased 1,500 acres (500 ha) of land east of Carbondale from David Dixon for $1 per acre ($40 per ha). Logan named his new community "Carbondale" after Carbolic acid—an essential ingredient in experimental medicines then being developed at that time—because he had difficulty finding it elsewhere on the property. Logan's town grew slowly until 1834 when an Act of Congress created Champaign County; however, because Carbondale lay within Champaign County only until 1847 when it was transferred to DuPage County due to growing population levels there, it continued to serve as an important commercial center for both counties until nearly all manufacturing activities left town during World War II save for a few small businesses related to munitions production.* In 1903, a group of local businessmen formed the City Council which grew steadily in power until 1924 when Mayor George Wirtz appointed himself mayor without following rules set up by the council.* In 1932 Wirtz became dictator of America under Franklin D Roosevelt who changed many rules governing city governance; however Wirtz resigned two years later over differences with Roosevelt about how much power he should surrender while still serving as mayor* A new mayoralty ordinance was passed on November 3rd 1934 setting out procedures for mayoral succession should Wirtz die or be incapacitated†† In 1938 elected officials were given staggered terms beginning with one year out so that any vacancy could be filled quickly‡‡ From 1955 through 1957 two mayors served concurrently—one from 1954 through 1956 and one from 1957 through 1959††† On July 14th 1961 Walter Reuther became CEO (president) US Steel Corporation effective September 15th 1961 which led to increased competition among American companies for market share* In 1970 Mayor Richard Molnar took office after running unopposed and ordering police officers not to open fire on protesters during peaceful demonstrations outside Mayor Molnar's home* In 1979 Mayor Dick Daley ordered police officers used pepper spray against peaceful demonstrators inside City Hall* On December 5th 1984 another protest erupted outside Mayor Daley's house resulting in several arrests including 36-year-old Anthony Smith who later died from injuries received * On August 12th 1990 white nationalists clashed with Black Panthers near City Hall resulting in three deaths*, fifty-six injuries*, five arrests and $2 million damage done
The USAF has a rich airforce gift history. The USAF's first helicopter, the Bell UH-1D Huey, was donated to the USAF by GE Aviation in 1948. The USAF also received its first jet aircraft, the Lockheed P-38 Lightning, in 1951. The jet age began with the delivery of the North American P-51 Mustang to the USAF in 1957. In 1966, the USAF acquired its first McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II fighter jets from McDonnell Aircraft Corporation. Since then, the USAF has continued to receive new and exciting airplanes and helicopters for their aviation community.
