The navy has been a part of the Canton community for over eighty years. In that time, the navy has donated many items and services to the community. One of the most prominent donations made by the navy is their donation of USS Constitution Museum ship. This was in 1976. The Constitution Museum is located in Springfield, Illinois and it was built as a tribute to the USS Constitution which served in World War II and later became a museum. The institution is home to various exhibits about American history and culture. The USS Constitution Museum also donatedUSS Preble Museumwhich was located in Peoria, Illinois before being moved to Springfield in 2006. This museum focuses on military history from World War I through Vietnam. It also contains artifacts from Peoria’s Indian Wars period as well as earlier periods including 1812-1815. The canton community has also been recipients of other donations from the navy such as an entire destroyer squadron which was given to them in 1978 when they were designated Naval Air Station China Lake California “Dolphin” squadron and USS Independence Museum ship which served as a medical transport vessel during both World Wars I and II In addition, there have been numerous service members who have given their time and expertise to contribute towards naval projects within Canton including Captain Harry Bendix who volunteers his time every Saturday morning at local high school where he teaches children about seamanship As well as Rear Admiral Tom Ziegler who provides help with boat races throughout town each year

The town was founded in 1836 by John Stephenson and his family as a stop on the Underground Railroad. Canton became an agricultural center after being given land to do so by the state of Illinois in 1868. The town's first post office was established in 1876. In 1907, Canton was named one of ten "most charming small towns" in America by "Reader's Digest". In 1961, it became an incorporated village under the name of Appleton-Canton. In 1984, it reverted to its original name and status as a village until it merged with Appleton on January 1, 2009 to form the current city of Canton. According to the 2010 census, there are 9,582 people living in Canton; 6% black or African American; 26% Hispanic or Latino; 64% male; 36% female. Of this population: 66% age 25 and over are married couples living together; 31% are single parents with children under 25 years old; 11% have no children under 25 years old and 8% are widows or widowers ages 50 and older.

Canton is a city in the northeast United States, on the border of Illinois and Michigan. The population was 27,643 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Canton was founded in 1814 as a trading post on the St Clair River by fur traders and became a town in 1847. The city's first mayor was John P. Hennepin, who also served as its first governor. In 1868, Canton became a state capital after Illinois seceded from Union Territory of Indiana. The city has experienced significant growth over the past two centuries and today it has a population of over 60,000 people and an estimated $1 billion economy. Its history can be traced back to 1814 when fur traders settled here after trekking through what is now Michigan Territory seeking new land to trade with Native Americans. In that year, Ulysses S Grant arrived in America from England with news that there had been discovered vast amounts of gold near Buffalo, New York - rich enough for anyone to start making money! Grant immediately set about finding out more about this newly discovered fortune and soon realized that Canton could be just what he needed for his new country! He dispatched his brother-in-law, James Kapp (who later became president), to explore possible locations for a trading post on the St Clair River where he could establish himself as an important player in this developing industry! Kapp found several sites within easy wagon journey of each other - one being what would become Canton - but no one wanted to stake their claim because they felt they were too close to Detroit! After some careful consideration by both Kapp and Grant, it was decided that Canton should be chosen as the outpost because it offered possibilities for Merchants/Managers /Fur Traders / investors not only access to goods available only at these points downstream but also potential connections with adjacent regions should any problems develop upstream! Kapp named his new town "Canton" after General Anthony Wayne's victory at Battle Creek against Native American forces led by Chief Tecumseh on July 3rd 1796 – thus proving that white men could successfully fight off Native attacks while living among our own people! The town quickly grew due to friendly relationships established between residents and local trader(s) who brought goods such as lumber and minerals back upriver daily! By 1800, many homes were built including grist mills which ground corn into flour which was sold throughout the area; businesses included stores (such as Fifer & Co., Smith & Wesson & Others), taverns (the beginnings of today's present day Midway Park District), blacksmith shops (later replaced by carpenters' workshops) etc.; public buildings included log cabin churches dedicated primarily to Protestant services; schools providing instruction in reading/math/ science; Potawatomi Indian Nation contributed troops during various wars with Great Britain culminating with their victory at Fallen Timbers in 1812!!! At this time settler activity began expanding beyond just trading posts onto virgin lands giving rise to claims for title squatting along riverbanks- something never before experienced in North America!!! Claimants turned increasingly violent towards those who dared cross them or failed tto pay rent constantly demanded by squatters!!! Eventually military action erupted resulting in numerous settlements being burned down including most notably Canandaigua Mills where Governor Rufus King had attempted refuge!! Many refugees fled across state lines taking whatever belongings they could carry before finally reaching Canada via Quebec City!! From here onward life slowly returned back into normalcy until 1840 when another big surge of immigration arrived from Germany creating yet another spat between Northerners vs Germans….. again nothing ever came easily within NORTHERN AMERICA!!!!!
Canton was founded by the Potawatomi Indians in 1795. The town was named after General Jonathan Canton, who had led the American Revolution. In 1802, the United States acquired it from the Potawatomi and renamed it Cairo. In 1836, the name of the town was changed to Canton, Illinois.
