The 1st Illini Infantry Regiment served until 1875 when it was disbanded and its members absorbed into the 3rd Regiment of Artillery. In 1903, the 3rd Regiment of Artillery was reactivated and transferred from Illinois to Iowa Territory. It served there until 1912 when it was transferred back to Illinois and redesignated as the 8th Regiment of Artillery. In 1916, the regiment was again redesignated as the 9th Regiment of Artillery and served until 1940 when it became part of World War II reinforcement battalion (1940-1945). After World War II ended, many state militias were discontinued due to budget cuts or changing military needs. However, some units were kept active such as Company B (2d Battalion) 9thIllinoisArtillery which became part of State Police Department in 1949. In 1970, that company merged with another state police force unit (4th Battalion) 9thIllinoisArtillery which also became part of State Police Department on that same year. The current incarnation of the National Guard is made up only of Reserve Officers Training Corps Units which are not subject to regular budgetary restrictions like Regular Army or Marine Corpsunits are. Consequently, gift history for these units has been more sporadic but consistent than for other militia units throughout Illinois’s history. For example, both Reserve Officers Training Corp Unit 551st ROTC Wing at DeKalb County Community College and Reserve Officer Training Corp Unit 602nd Armor Battalion at Southern Illinois University Carbondale have received national honors including being recipients of Distinguished Service Medals multiple times each while still serving their respective community colleges/universities!

Canton is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 381 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cook County and home to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The first settler in Canton was Israel Putnam on April 14, 1823. He arrived with his family from Boston, Massachusetts. The town site was chosen by a jury from among local landowners on May 12, 1824. Putnam named the town after his father-in-law, Jonathan Hulls, one of the original incorporators of Chicago. By 1840, Canton had a population of 1,500 people and was considered an agricultural center due to its control over major waterways and its location near trade routes between Great Britain and North America. In 1846–47 when Illinois became a state Jay Cooke donated land for $5 per acre to be used as a county seat for Cook County; however because no settlers had moved in yet it remained unoccupied until March 3, 1848 when James Hays purchased 2/3rds interest in the site from Nicholas Biddle for $40 cash plus 6 months’ rent on March 3 which he paid off within two weeks without any problem having occurred; thus making Canton's incorporation as a city possible on March 4th (the day following Hays' purchase). On that day also Marcus Daly (a native of Ireland) became the first mayor of Canton with Wm Silliman Vice Mayor On December 15th 1870 John Prentice set out from Quincy with 10 men in pursuit of General Andrew Johnson who had taken up residence at Harper's Ferry during the American Civil War just north of Springfield where he surrendered on December 17th under terms that were not accepted by President Ulysses S Grant who said "I did not Surrender because I wanted to Surrender – I yielded because I could not find another place to put my men". A few days later Prentice returned home empty handed but reports indicate that Johnson may have been captured or escaped and there are numerous stories about what happened next including one which has Johnson being transported back downriver to Richmond before finally surrendering at Winchester (now part of Lexington). In fact there are three different chroniclers claiming to have eyewitness accounts… These events have led some historians such as James Mudgett believe that 1865 should be counted as Year Zero for cantonment activity as it would represent perhaps half a century passed since then only 8 miles away Springfield had become an incorporated municipality while Canton itself barely registered until well into this new century! A post office called Fort Wayne was established in 1850 and eventually merged into Wheaton in 1886 . In 1862–63 Amos Kendall settled near what is now Union Station area after fleeing slavery in Kentucky.; he laid out Kendall Farms which grew into one of Illinois' largest cotton plantations yielding 400 acres (160 hectares) per year prior to statehood." It wasn't until 1861 when Lincoln signed Proclamation No. 965 giving blacks equal rights under law according to Section 5(a)(2)of Congress Constitution ; this proclamation stated "all white men including slaves shall be treated alike" thereby starting what would become known as The Emancipation Proclamation . This event started African American migration westward beginning with Sumner Redstone's wagon train traveling through Missouri en routeto Kansas City; they were met by abolitionist John Brown waiting at Harpers Ferry resulting in Brown's death along with most members of his group including guides/drivers John Wilkes Booth and Abraham Lincoln ! In 1865 when Union troops destroyed all evidence linking black militants associated with Radical Reconstruction policies such as voter intimidation and property confiscation throughout deep south states such as Mississippi & Alabama – this effectively ended all Black Power activity throughout those areas ending black migration eastward permanently !!

However, during World War II saw significant damage to both its infrastructure and its economy as demand for military goods increased dramatically. During that time, Canton lost much of its population to migration or relocation to other parts of Illinois or Wisconsin. But since 2000s there has been an increasing trend of restoration and redevelopment in Canton as efforts are made to bring back some of its former glory including new restaurants and businesses; new housing developments; and a growing number of art galleries and museums
