Canton is a town in McHenry County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,362 at the 2010 census. The first settlement in what is now Canton was made on the banks of the Chicago River by French-Canadian immigrants who sailed from Quebec in 1833. They named their community "Canton" after the city of Paris, France. When Indiana Territory was organized in 1787, Canton became one of its initial towns and remained so until 1815 when it became part of Illinois. In 1830, a group of settlers led by John Crouch set up a log cabin on the edge of what is now Canton Lake. A few years later they erected a log church which still stands today. In 1835, John Crouch donated land to build a public square within which he established schools and stores for his colonists. This square has been called "Canton's Square." The first post office in Canton was established on October 12, 1836, and served as the center for mail delivery for all of McHenry County until it closed on December 31, 1957. The first store opened in 1840 also served as the county courthouse until it burned down in 1906. In 1865-67 an addition to the courthouse was built that included an opera house and other features typical of early American courthouses such as internal stairs and Corinthian columns (now gone). In 1871–73 three brick churches were erected: First Baptist (later known as Emmanuel Episcopal), Second Baptist (later known as Trinity Episcopal), and Methodist (later known as Methodist/Churchill Avenue Presbyterian). These churches are still standing today withstood because they were built without any debt or government subsidy; instead they received payment through property taxes which continue to be collected today. A new school building was constructed between 1909–10 using $2,500 from local banker George Hennepin while he chaired an education committee formed to improve education opportunities for Ohioans displaced during World War I. The school building is still standing and serves as both the cantonal library branch (opened 1959) and district high school gymnasium/ auditoriums today! It also housed many offices including those for marketing research done at nearby Rockford University during this time!
