Canton is a city in and the county seat of Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 126,651 at the 2010 census. It lies on the northern border of Illinois and Michigan. The first European settlers in Canton were fur traders from Canada who built their trading post near what is now the downtown core in 1795. The town grew rapidly during the 18th century as hundreds of German farmers came to settle in what is today Kane County. In 1814, General John Harrison founded a new village called Bentonville on the north side of Chicago River to serve as a commercial center for area farmers and traders. By 1830, Bentonville had become an important transportation hub with connections to both Chicago and Detroit. During the American Civil War, Canton sided with Union forces over Confederate sympathizers; as a result, it was burned by Confederates on April 15, 1863. After the war, many Germans returned to Canton while others left for other parts of Illinois or Wisconsin. However, because of its strategic location within close proximity to Chicago and its role as a crossroads for trade and transportation between these two cities, Canton continued to grow until it reached its current size by 1910. In 1915-16, Canton became one of sixteen towns in Kane County (later Cook County) which merged into one body becoming known as "Kane County". With this merger came increased development around downtown Core City including new housing developments such as California Plaza and Federal Plaza; businesses such as Armour & Co., Bendix Engine Works (now Briggs & Stratton), Dodge car dealership Raytheon Aircraft Corp., Jardine Rubber Company (now Jardine Mathesons) ; updated schools like North Central High School (now North Central Community College), Southwestern University (later Southern Illinois University Carbondale), Woodrow Wilson High School;and civic improvements like an outdoor hockey rink erected on State Street near present day Civic Center Park which still serves today as one of the most popular tourist destinations in town
Canton was founded on the site of a small Indian village in 1814. The first settler in what is now Canton was Ebenezer Higgins, who built a cabin on the banks of the Illini River. In 1836, John Stephenson erected the first store in what is now Canton. In 1840, Augustus Kelley moved to Canton from New York and opened the first hotel in town. The town grew rapidly and by 1854 it had a population of 2,500 people. In 1860, the Illinois Central Railroad arrived in Canton and began passenger service. This led to an increase in business and more people started moving into Canton. By 1870, there were 10 businesses in town and it had a population of 25,000 people.
