Canton is a small town in Illinois, United States. The population was 2,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Peoria Metro Area. Canton is located on the east bank of the Sangamon River, about west of Chicago and east of Springfield. The name "Canton" originates from a Shawnee word meaning "place where there are many Salmon." In 1814, General James Wilkinson discovered and named what would become Canton after he found an Indian village near which he was going to campaign against Native Americans. The first settler in what is now Canton was James Hays on March 30, 1818. The town was platted in 1824 by John Potter and other early traders and entrepreneurs who saw its potential as a trading post on the important Indiana- Illinois Railroad. By 1830, there were over 100 people living in Canton when it became part of Clay County. In 1830, most of the males in Clay County were required to serve two years apprenticeship with a wagonmaker or carpenter before they could own land or start businesses themselves; this requirement continued until 1865 when it was abolished by state law due to railroad development and technological advances. After serving their apprenticeship requirements, many new farmers started businesses such as grist mills and grain elevators; these businesses thrived until World War II when manufacturing jobs moved away from rural America into larger cities like Chicago and Detroit because those areas had more accessible resources available for industrial development. In 1925 (the year before Prohibition repealed alcohol sales throughout Illinois), a dancehall called The Cotton Club opened in Canton which quickly became one of the biggest nightlife destinations in Chicagoland attracted primarily African American workers who patronized white-owned bars that served light beer instead of hard liquordue to segregated drinking laws at the time). After prohibition ended on April 15th 1933 several local businessmen decided to open beer stores along with other new interests such as trucking services that had cropped up during prohibition era boom times like gambling dens (now considered dark side activities)and car dealerships catering specifically to black customers that dotted downtown streetscapes during this time periodknown today as 'Downtown' canton

Canton is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, USA. The population was 10,675 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The village of Canton was founded by John Lennon and Yoko Ono on May 25, 1847 as a result of an agreement between them and the United States government. The settlement grew rapidly due to its location at the junction of two railroads – the Illinois and Michigan Railway (IL&M) and the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad (C&NW). In 1853, a post office was established in Canton and it quickly became known as "the most important town in this vicinity." In 1871, Canton joined with other towns in northern Cook County to form what would become known as "The First Ward" which included all of Aurora Township, parts of Park Ridge Township and parts of Glenview Township. In 1907, Canton voted to change its name from "Canton" to "New Town". During World War II, Canton played host to many American servicemen who were located aboard USS Quincy (CV-7) or USS Bunker Hill (LHD-1). One such veteran is Admiral Chester Nimitz who stated that he had never felt more welcome ashore than when he arrived at Quincy after being transferred from battleship USS Missouri (BB-63). On July 1st 1964, New Town voters passed a resolution declaring themselves an open-air shopping center called Village Square which opened to the public on October 3rd1964. Today's Village Square includes over 150 stores including Sears Roebuck & Co., Macy's Inc., JCPenney Inc., Kohl's Department Store Inc., Dell Computer Corporation and more!
Canton was founded in 1847 by the US Army as Fort Wayne. In 1871, it became the capital of Illinois. The city was renamed after General Henry Clay Frick in 1893.
