Canton, Illinois is a city located in the Quad-Cities area of Northwest Illinois. The population was 25,965 at the 2010 census and it is the county seat of Kane County. The Chicago metropolitan area is just to the north and east of Canton. The first Europeans to come to what is now Canton were French traders who established a trading post there in 1812. The post became known as Fort Dearborn after General John Dearborn, an American general who fought in the War of 1812. In 1821, Congress created Kane County from parts of La Salle and McLean counties. In 1830, when Ohio gained statehood, it included part of what are now Canton Township and Parkland Township. In 1836, when that state was merged into Indiana Territory, part of Knox County was added to Canton township including present-day Starkville and other smaller communities east of Warsaw Road on the edge of Indian Creek Valley. In 1840, when Illinois became a U.S. state, all but two townships within Kane County were included in its borders; however, Starkville remained unincorporated until 1845 when it incorporated as a village under then-Mayor James McNealy's leadership with 537 residents (out of a total population for Kane County over 10 thousand).
