The Illinois Air National Guard's 191st Fighter Wing deployed a gift to the Canton-based community in memory of fallen service members last year. The gift was an air force deployable missile system, the F-15E Strike Eagle. The 191st FW's F-15E Strike Eagle flew over Canton on Dec. 5, 2016 as part of its annual visit to the area in commemoration of military service and Veterans Day. The Gift was donated by Raytheon Co., which manufactures the aircraft and provides support services for the wing throughout its tours of duty in the state. Air National Guard soldiers from around Illinois participate in flyover events such as this one every year to remember their fallen comrades and raise funds for military causes. This event is also an opportunity for families to see how reunification affects life within their communities, as well as learn about local businesses that have benefitted from support from local militaries.
Canton, Illinois is a city in the U.S. state of Illinois. The population was 30,811 at the 2010 census, making it the third-largest city in Illinois and the ninth-largest city in Chicago metropolitan area. It is also the county seat of Kane County. Canton has been inhabited by Native Americans since 1680. The first European to enter what is now Canton was Jean Baptiste Point du Sable, who founded a trading post on the Kankakee River in 1795. In 1815, John Crain founded a small town called Jacksonville on land that he had purchased from DuPage County for $2 million dollars (). The first settler in what is now Canton was Jean Antoine de Bougainville, who arrived there in 1810 as part of an effort by General James Kasky to establish a permanent French settlement east of the Mississippi River ({Dakota} Territory). He named his new village after Nicholas-Jacques Cartier's mission station at Quebec City and pronounced it "Kanton." Canton, Illinois is an unincorporated community in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The post office was closed on July 15, 2009. The village of Canton was platted in 1851 by Jesse Haggerty and James Sweeny. It was named after the canton or core of a large tree that stood near the original site of the village. The first settler to arrive in what is now Canton was Levi Coffin in 1853. In 1871, the town got its start when two men from Michigan started a flour mill in what is now the east side of town. In 1893, a group of farmers bought the mill and began to operate it as a flour mill and also made cheese from milk from their cows. By 1902, there were ten businesses operating in Canton with over $5 million worth of goods sold annually. Canton became an independent city on April 14, 1907 when it passed a referendum approving its incorporation into Kane County as a result of efforts by Mayor Wm Crain and Postmaster General John Potter. On October 1st 1907 city fathers voted to rename themselves "Canton" after Samuel Morse'stownship in Boston which they had previously served as their
