Calumet City is a small city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 12,211 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first inhabitants of Calumet City were the Potawatomi and their descendants who arrived from Indiana during the late 18th century. They were followed by other European groups such as the Dutch and French in subsequent waves. A post office called "Caledon" was established in 1827, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1846. In 1848, a group of settlers led by John Dolan founded a town on the east side of present-day Calumet City Cemetery near what is now Michigan Avenue and Fullerton Avenue. This community became known as Dolanville after its founder. In 1870, another group of pioneers built a log cabin on land that would later become Commerce Street and High Street. This community became known as Calumet City after its founder, James HickeyCalumet being an anglicized form of his initial name which he had learned while living among the Potawatomi Nation speakers on Lake Michigan's east coast). The first settler to live in what is now Calumet City was Samuel Morse who arrived there with his family from Boston on July 4, 1800; he soon erected a sawmill along current-day Cicero Avenue just north of where he currently resides (the first home built within what is now Calumet City). Morse's mill continued to function until 1862 when it was destroyed by fire due to overloading onto beams set into the ground below (this also marks one of only two cases in Cook County history where an entire brick building has been lost due to fire). The original Morse House still stands today at 524 N Cicero Ave., which remains one of downtown Chicago's most iconic buildings. On October 15, 1830, Drury Cottage—later renamed Drury House—was purchased by Captain Abraham Lincoln from abolitionist John Fennimore Cooper for $1 using money donated by local merchants looking to promote self-reliance during Illinois' early years as a state (Lincoln himself would later refer to Cottage as "Drury Place"). After serving as both presidential campaign headquarters for Zachary Taylor and John Quincy Adams during their respective running times (1838–41), Drury House reverted back to its original name following Lincolns' election win on November 6th 1796: "Drury Cottage" becoming again synonymous with political power & privilege within Illinois’ borders for nearly 200 years thereafter! On March 3rd 1861, news reached America that Springfield Township had approved plans for a new county seat located at Rock Island Heights; this allowed then Governor Andrew Johnson to order all counties within Cook County into reformation under orders issued via Executive Order #6361 dated February 11th 1861 – this gave rise to modern day CalumETCity! With this new addition however comes significant challenges including increased transportation costs associated with moving people & goods between different parts of Cook County (& more specifically between Rock Island Heights & Downtown Chicago),& much like today’s real estate marketplaces have done throughout our histories (& continue To do so even tho prices have continually risen), many citizens felt they didn’t quite “fit”in & weren’t actually “part Of THE CITY OF CALUMET CITY?". Nevertheless though some did leavedue primarilyto geographical reasons (eastern suburbs closer unto Rock Island Heights becoming increasingly desirable) others choseTo stay because they felt comfortable knowing their neighbors…and knew that if things ever got too rough anywhere within OUR COMMUNITY we could always rely On THE FRIENDS WE KNEW! . . . . . . ."
