This effort was part of the Union Army's effort to fortified and protect the city during the American Civil War. The men who volunteered served for various periods including three years as soldiers in the Union army before being discharged. Calumet City, Illinois, is a town in Cook County, Illinois. The population was 21,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Calumet City was John Hays in 1836. The current town was organized as a village on March 10, 1871 by Order of the General Assembly of Illinois under the name "Hancock". On October 15, 1976 it changed its name to Calumet City and became a city on December 3, 2006. The land that would become Calumet City was surveyed by Jonas La Salle in 1779 and purchased from the Wabash Company by George Washington Morrison. The plat for what would become Calumet City shows two large grants of land totaling 640 acres (251 hectares). One grant included what is now River Road and one included what is now State Street. In 1836 John Hays established himself in this location with his family; he built a log cabin on a bluff overlooking the Potawatomi River. By 1840 Hays had married Anna Maria Holmbeck and they farmed around their farmstead until1853 when they sold it to Abram Ivesen who moved them to Evanston where they raised cattle until 1860 when he bought another farm southeast of town and started building homes there which he completed in 1865-66 when Indiana statehood made him an owner-occupier rather than just tenant farmer like most other early settlers; also during this time he began trading goods with Holland via wagon road across Lake Michigan - thus helping start/finish Dutch culture hereabouts among some residents). In 1861 Ivesen's son Julius bought out his father's share of the farm so Abram Ivesen became sole proprietor & continued farming until his death in 1902; thereafter ownership passed through various families until it finally reverted back to George Washington Morrison's heirs upon his death 16 years later(which incidentally may have been due to difficulties associated with finding successors as more than one man had acquired title simultaneously)... George Washington Morrison had originally purchased 640 acres west of present day Park Avenue from Abraham Lincoln for $14 per acre... In 1886 Charles Aiken established himself here close to home after being discharged from military service near Milwaukee where he'd been born & raised (& still live) & owning 100 acres (40 hectares) east side of street named after him along banks Of river Des Plaines... This development led eventually to Charles' eventual purchase (in 1909)of adjoining 400 acre tract extending northerly past present day Arlington Heights boundaries for $1 per acre from Arthur Bensen who'd also grown up hereaboutsnearby... That same year local real estate developer Nathan Bedford Forrest bought all remaining lands within downtown limits (& annexed much newer parts southwesterly & southwest corner), turning then& currently housing Area Central School District campus including extensive private yards surrounding school property making it almost completely surrounded by Forrest ownedland)... Additionnally northwesterly boundary line between new portions annexation (& old portion annexed back then) forms border between old portions annexation (& Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance company campus)

Calumet City is an unincorporated community in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The community is located on the east side of the Chicago River. It lies along State Route 6 and is west of Calumet Harbor. The earliest known mention of Calumet City was as a small trading post on the banks of the Chicago River between 1824 and 1827. In 1836, James Kneeland founded Kneeland's Mills in what is now Calumet City and built a gristmill on Lake Michigan. By 1840, Kneeland had developed a sawmill, grist mill, and flour factory at his mills which became one of the largest flour-processing enterprises in Illinois. In 1848, John Sweeney established Sweeney's Mill in what is now Calumet City with a sawmill and furnace at his mill site. Sweeney became one of the most influential men in early Cook County politics and was elected county treasurer in 1851. In 1865–1866 he served as president of the Illinois Central Railroad Company dynamited by Confederate sympathizers during the American Civil War. Afterward he retired to his farm near present-day Cicero Township where he died in 1916 aged 86 years old. During World War II, many industries were set up or moved to Calumet City due to its proximity to Area B (the manufacturing center for Midwest America) during wartime production.[1] Many factories that produced munitions such as Ford Motor Company[2] and Bethlehem Steel[3] relocated their production units from Dearborn Heights (Detroit), Michigan to nearby Cicero Township so that they could be closer to home for war production needs; this included Kaiser Aluminum Works,[4] Foxconn Ltd.,[5][6] Hormel Foods Inc., Coleman Refining & Storage,[7], GAF Corporation,[8][9][10], JE Pistons Inc.[11],[12], Phillips Petroleum Co.,[13][14]; it should be noted that these productions were not all located within easy access by city residents or businesses like Sweeney’s Mill—some distance away from homes necessary for munitions storage capacity.[15] Overall, over 1 million people lived within a radius around area B when war production began which would have required approximately 20 miles² (.30 square kilometers) just to cover all residential areas within it!
