Calumet City is an unincorporated community in Kane County, Illinois, located on the border of the towns of Carbondale and Normal. It lies in a valley between Carbondale andNormal mountains and is surrounded by forested countryside. The town has a population of about 1,000 people. The name "Calumet" was given to the community in 1854 by Captain John Purdy prominent in the fur trade in what is today Minnesota. He named his trading post for the village after Lake Calumet near Chicago. Settlement began around 1840 when some men prospected for coal near present-day Carbondale. A post office was established at Calumet City in 1841, and remained open until it was discontinued in 1904. In 1854, Captain John Purdy founded the Townsite Company with land acquisitions from other investors including Isaac Aspinwall and Solomon Pratt. The company laid out a town site on high ground east of Carbondale where he had previously traded furs with Native American groups (the Ojibwe). The town as it exists today dates back to that time; only two buildings from its early days remain: Captain Purdy's log cabin (now part of the Illinois State Fairgrounds) and a general store built about 1850 by Andrew Sibley (1822-1892), father of General James Fenton Sibley who later served as governor of Illinois from 1898 to 1903. The first settler at CalumETCity was Abram Brown who arrived there on October 24th 1841 from Manchester Township, New York with his family consisting of Abram Browns wife Sarah Jane; their three children George Washington Brown; Rhoda Elizabeth Brown; Anna Catharine(Harding)Brown were all born within one year following their husbands arrival into this new landmass called America! Abram Browns house still stands side by side with another original pioneer settler home known as "Fenway" which still stands today just south east of Interstate 80 acrossfrom White Sands Resort Casino! Fenway also housed many local businesses such as Mr Joes Hardware Store & Cafe which remains open today serving up pizza ovens made fresh every day right off your street corner!

The city was named for General James Fenton Calumet (1786-1858), an officer in the American Revolutionary War and one of the first United States Army generals to march into battle with his troops mounted on horseback. A post office was established at Calumet City in 1851, and remained open until it merged with other nearby towns in 1922. In 1870, a railroad station called "Old Home Place" served as a stop on the Michigan Central Railroad between Chicago and West Side Slave Town. In 1872, Old Home Place became known as "thecenteroftheworld". When Northwestern Railwaybuilt its line through Kane County from Chicago to Rockford in 1888, they built a station just east of downtown Calumet City on Arlington Avenue; this train terminal remain within walking distance of present day Calumet City's central business district today. Many famous people have lived or worked here including: Mayor Richard Miele (1974-1981); actor Al Pacino (1942-1998); composer Igor Stravinsky (1881-1971); entrepreneurs Elon Musk (2004-) and Charles Simonyi (1929-2002).
