Calumet City is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 24,711 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The Calumet River forms part of the town's border to the north and east. The Town of Calumet City was organized on November 1, 1847 by David Rice and others as an act toProvide for Better Government within the Township Limits of Calumet City." In 1957 construction began on what would become known as "The Great Chicago Fire" – one of only two fires in history that destroyed more than one million square feet (100 hectares) of property – primarily responsible for total loss totaling $30 million ($ in today's dollars). During World War II adjacent Willowbrook Park experienced significant growth due to its use as a bombing range by the U.S., RAF Bomber Command during World War II; however much less attention has been given to it since then other than occasional pilgrimages from residents looking for evidence remains which can be seen from state Route 35 just south of town limits near Willowbrook Racetrack off Interstate 90.– In recent years development in Willowbrook Park has again received some attention with plans underway to build an extensive mixed use housing project including office space and retail components along with greenfield development adjoining Interstate 90.– Despite this new development there are still pockets throughout town where remnants from WWII remain such as bombed out buildings or military training areas which make it difficult if not impossible to completely forget about what happened here.-

In 1870, Abraham Lincoln was elected president of the United States and renamed Fort Dearborn in Chicago because he wanted to make it clear that America's capital was located in Northwestern Illinois. The city grew rapidly during his time as president due to its role as an important transportation hub for goods flowing between Chicago and other parts of the country.
