Calumet City is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 11,833 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cook County. The first settler in Calumet City was George Potter, who arrived in 1818. He named his community Potterville after his uncle and guardian, Sir George Potter of London. In 1829, John Pemberton founded Peabody Township in what is now Calumet City. The town was platted on December 16, 1830 by Jno.[1] Pemberton and Daniel Davenport were the first to purchase land from the Sachem Potawatomi Nation for $1 per acre (or $3 per square mile). The first store in Calumet City opened on July 4th, 1833. That year saw the arrival of James Kapp as village trustee and later mayor; he served until 1840 when he became a state legislator from Chicago. In 1840–41 Kapp built a home on Main Street which still stands today as one of the city's most popular tourist attractions; it is known as "Kapp House". During this time period there were also several other businesses that opened up around town such as a bakery and a grocery store before being replaced or closed by newer stores over time including an insurance company in 1907 and a meat market in 1954-55. In 1847 Michael Kelly purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) east of town along what is now I-88 for $10 per acre (or $2 per square kilometer). This set off what would become known as "the Kelly Boom" with many young people coming to Calumet City to work on the new agricultural land that had been acquired by Kelly during this time period although some remained living within the town limits until their deaths or relocation away from rural areas starting about 1930 when Interstate 88 was constructed through much of Illinois making farming increasingly difficult due to travel times between cities etc etc... Today remnants of these older farms can be seen scattered throughout parts of downtown area including part of what used to be Kelly's corn crib/possible slaughterhouse complex on Wacker Drive just south side street from current day Walgreens building located adjacent property owned byIllinois State University - old Agricultural Research Lab buildings across alley next doorCurrent day Sears Building located northeast corner Wacker Drive & present day First National Bank building
