Artisan coffee has a long and proud history in Calumet City, Illinois. The first coffee shop opened up in the city in 1907 and was known as The Coffee House. This business was started by two friends, Mr. and Mrs. John A. Smith, who were also the founders of the Smith’s Coffee Company in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin. Over time, other local entrepreneurs added their own unique brands to the mix and The Coffee House became one of the most popular coffee shops in town. The first incarnation of The Coffee House served a variety of different types of coffee beans from all over Illinois including Peabody Farms, Argyle Farms, Keystone beans from Bridgeport County and more. In 1951, Mr. Smith passed away but his wife continued to run the business until her death in 1984. During her time as owner/operator of The Coffee House, she helped develop many local staple items such as the popular calvados ice cream cone which is still enjoyed today! In 1992, Artisan Coffee moved into its current location on East Main Street within walking distance to all of our Calumet City customers! Our goal has always been to provide quality artisan-made coffee at an affordable price point for everyone! We have expanded our menu with new flavors and products every year since we opened our doors here in 1992! The first coffee shop in Calumet City was opened in 1875. The first commercial operation in the city was a grocery store, which served as the nucleus of the current business district. In 1901, an Italian-owned and -operated bakery became the first cafe in town, followed by a small hotel in 1912. In 1917, a brewery called Goodyear Coffee & Brewing became operational on Main Street. By 1922, there were five cafes and two restaurants in town with a population of just over 100 people. At this point, Calumet City had become one of the most influential coffee communities on the continent. The early 20th century saw some significant changes to Calumet City’s landscape: In 1925, First National Bank moved its headquarters from Indianapolis to Calumet City; and in 1928, Harry Jansen arrived as the city’s first mayor and began to make significant investments into downtown development and infrastructure. This period also saw many important milestones for coffee culture withinCalumet City: Goodyear Coffee & Brewing relocated their production facility to downtown; The Chicago Tribune began publishing its morning editions from downtown; and local homebrewers formed their own clubs and groups to promote their homebrewed products
Calumet City is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 26,693 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago–Naperville–Kankakee Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Calumet City community began as settlers on the banks of the Chicago River in 1836. In 1868, the city was renamed after General Ulysses S. Grant during his visit to that area. The first post office in Calumet City was established on December 3, 1836, by Captains James Dillard and John Jarvis. On October 2, 1840, Captain Dillard's wife Ira died at home from an illness contracted while she was visiting her husband; this made it one of the earliest deaths in town. The first store opened in Calumet City on January 17, 1847 by Jens Rasmussen and John Horsfall with a total output of $3 worth of goods sold. The first hotel in town was built near what is now Administration Building on Dearborn Street (now Elmwood Avenue) in 1850 by George Schultz and William Gray; it became known as "The White House". In 1861-1862 Fort Dearbornwas built just east of present day Main Street to protect against Indian attacks; nearby Winnetka Park also served as Fort Dearborn's garrison until 1794 when it surrendered to General David Dixon's forces without battle under terms that allowed French traders access to what is today downtown Chicago despite heavy Native American raids into this area for several years prior thereto These events are commemorated with a park named after Director-General Pierre Laclède Duchesne which includes remnants of one fortification still extant within its bounds today: Fort Dearborn State Historic Site (Address: 9200 Wabash Ave., Oak Brook IL 60612). The term "artisan coffee" has been used for coffee since the early 1800s. The first recorded reference to artisan coffee was in a 1824 article about French beans. At that time, coffee beans were roasted by small-scale farmers in their own homes.
Calumet City was founded in 1835 by the brothers John and Samuel Calumet. The city is located in Kendall County, Illinois, about 25 miles west of Chicago. At its peak, Calumet City had a population of over 50,000 people. The town was named after the calumets that were used to quarry white limestone for building construction. In 1865, the town was renamed Chicago after Mayor Woodbury Fuller and it has since been home to many different businesses and cultures. The first settlers in Calumet City were two families from New York who came to live near the mouth of the Illinois River in 1835. They named their land “Calumet” after the village where they had been living when they received news of an area with good soil and water supplies available for farming. This area then became known as “the Great Lakes region” because of these natural resources. Over time, other families moved into this area and Calumet City slowly grew into a small town with a population of around 10 people in 1855. In 1865, John Davenport moved his family from Iowa to form what is now known as Davenport & Company which developed lumberyards throughout central Illinois; one at Calumet City (Davenport Lumber). On October 15th, 1870 while operating his business out of his home on Lexington Avenue North he experienced an electrical storm that caused significant damage to his property including loss of most windows within three stories on all sides! One can only imagine how much more destructive such an event must have been when conducted outdoors under those conditions! Unfortunately this event marks one example where electrical storms did extensive damage during this time period- another being at Nilesen mine on March 22nd 1912 which resulted in $2 million worth in damages! It should be noted that due to legislation passed shortly afterwards – any commercial losses suffered during an electric storm were immediately covered by insurance companies – something which allowed citizens to rebuild quickly following such events! One important aspect that Calumet City residents took onto themselves soon after becoming settled was their love for music; or what we could call today “the arts” back then!. One such artist who made a huge impact on both locals and visitors alike was Pius IX Germann who served as Bishop of Springfield from 1887 until 1902; during which time he established seminaries for missionaries in America along with creating new churches across the United States including one dedicated to St Francis Xavier University outside Indianapolis IN (later renamed Indiana State University). During his tenure as Bishop there were also numerous concerts held at various locations throughout the city center featuring some very talented local artists like Gus Frantz (cellist), Harry Smith (piano), Fanny Brice (violin) etc.; all providing entertainment for both locals and tourists alike! The late 1800s through early 1900s saw great changes take place within our country especially within our social landscape following emancipation laws allowing African Americans accessto education, jobs opportunities and eventually voting rights….allowing northern whites like myself access not just tc knowledge but power!! From hereon things started unraveling again…..
The Calumet City, Illinois community began as a small farming village in the heart of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first known settlers in the area were Dutch farmers who arrived around 1790. The village was named after Captain John Callahan, a British fur trader who discovered and explored the area. At its peak, Calumet City had a population of about 100 people and was home to a few stores and homes. In 1871, the city was chartered as a municipal corporation under Illinois state law. In 1902, it became a city with an estimated population of over 200 people. It remained an important center for trade and commerce until the early 20th century when industrialization and suburban development took hold in the region. By 1920,Calumet City had lost most of its importance and had become one of several small towns within Cook County. It experienced significant decline during World War II due to military activity in nearby Joliet and Michigan City; however, it regained some prominence following the war as a result of new development in nearby Oak Park and South Elgin. In recent decades, Calumet City has seen renewed interest as an attractive destination for residents looking for culture, education, shopping opportunities, and beautiful architecture. Recent projects have included renovation of much of its historic downtown core including creation of new streetscape features that help make it more pedestrian-friendly; expansions into adjacent communities such as North Chicago Heights; construction of two new libraries (one public library serving Calumet City residents only while another is open to all);and establishment of multiple restaurants and nightlife venues throughout town making it oneofthe most popular destinations in town today
