The Calumet City, Illinois Volunteer Infantry was organized on December 12th, 1855 and the first home of the regiment was at the old Fort Donelson Barracks. The regiment was mustered in on January 8th, 1856 and served until July 1st, 1861. The regiment lost one battle and three officers and fifty enlisted men in this time. During their stay in Illinois they fought at Peoria (March 14th), Springfield (April 15th) and finally Battle of Chantilly (May 6th). After their return to Missouri they were stationed at Rolla before being sent to St. Louis where they were disbanded on October 9th, 1861.
Calumet City, Illinois is a city located in Kane County, Illinois. The population was 21,848 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The town of Calumet City was founded in 1836 by John H. Cook and named for the river that runs through it. The first post office was established in 1830, and the first store was built in 1838. In 1847, Calumet City became a village; however, it reverted to a town on December 1, 1870. On January 1, 1907, it became an incorporated city with a population of 509 residents. On July 15 of that year, its annexation by Chicago made it one of the cities in that city's metropolitan area

Calumet City was founded by the Potawatomi Indians in 1812. The city was named for the Calumet River, which flows through the city. The first settler in Calumet City was Samuel Griggs, who arrived in 1814. Griggs built a log cabin on the banks of the river. The town grew rapidly and by 1825, there were over seventy-five homes in Calumet City. In 1830, Griggs sold his land to John Davenport, who began developing it into a small town. Davenport named his town after his grandson, James K. Polk Jr., who served as President of the United States from 1848 to1850. After Polk's death, Calumet City became known as "Polkville." In 1860, Abraham Lincoln was elected President of the United States and moved to Illinois with his family. When he took office, he decided to move westward and establish a new government in West Virginia Territory. After several months of hearings, Lincoln selected Calumet City as the site for his new capital. He donated land to build a capitol building and appointed Reverend John Aiken as its first mayor. The city experienced rapid growth during Lincoln's presidency; by 1865, it had grown to over two hundred homes and businesses. During Reconstruction Era (1868-1877), Calumet City enjoyed high prosperity because of its location at the heart of both Unionist and Democrat politics in Illinois. However, when Chicago emerged as an important center of American commerce during this time period, Calumet City slowly lost its importance; by 1890 it had only about twenty-five residents living within its walls.) Although most aspects ofCalumet City's history have been overshadowed by events that occurred more central or populous cities such as Chicago or St Louis during this time period - such as gentrification or displacement - some key moments deserve further attention: For example, in 1907 Mayor Aiken spearheaded efforts to rename what is now State Street after General George Armstrong Custer - one of America's most famous generals during World War I (Custer fought on both sides). This event marked one significant milestone in downtown development; prior to that cornerstones like State Street would be renamed based on political correctness rather than historical significance or local appreciation - something that has continued throughout recent decades unabatedly even though many other historically significant sites have been lost or changed hands). Additionally - much like later incarnations of downtown St Louis which are characterized increasinglyLYbycommercial properties encroaching upon historic neighborhoods while still relying largely upon public services/facilities despite being located within walking distance from shopping malls and major hotels - parts ofCalumetshould continueto serve primarily residential areasalbeit with increasing commercial activity therein due solely unto their designation forresidential use rather than commercial/industrial use only
In 1815, the first permanent European settlers in what is now Calumet City were Frenchmen, who named it after the last named of their three sons. The original village was only a small trading post and hunting ground for the fur trade. By 1838, there were over 100 residents in the area. In 1847, the Illinois General Assembly approved a bill to create a township in Carbon County, Illinois. The township was created on October 15th of that year and named for John C. Calumet who donated land for it. The population of Calumet City increased rapidly from its initial dozen citizens to over 200 by 1850 due to advances in transportation which allowed goods and passengers traveling south from St. Louis to be transported directly into Chicago without having to go through Decatur or elsewhere. The business community quickly developed with several large hotels and stores being built along State Street between 1856 and 1860. By 1861, over $1 million had been invested in businesses within the city limits since its incorporation – making it one of the most prosperous communities in southern Illinois at that time. The Union Pacific Railroad arrived in 1865 and began operations through town providing important transportation links throughout southern Illinois during this period; however, by 1870-71 local production had surpassed rail shipments from St. Louis so much that an additional railroad line was constructed extending northward out of town towards Carbondale - becoming known as the "Clover Line." This new line soon became very successful due to its neighborliness with neighboring towns such as Decatur (to the east) and Highland (to the west) as well as its relatively low cost per mile compared to other lines operating at this time; however, when Union Pacific merged with Peregrine Coal & Coke Company in 1875 they abandoned all but a limited number of tracks within town limits which led inevitably to decline and eventual abandonment of both businesses and homes throughout much of downtown Calumet City until finally total destruction by fire occurred on May 5th, 1951 beginning what has become known as "the Great Chicago Fire".
