There is no one definitive navy deployed gift history in Cahokia, Illinois. However, some of the most common and memorable gifts given to members of the military have involved insignia or tools used by the navy.
Cahokia was an ancient town in the Illinois River valley in what is now Illinois and Indiana. Cahokia was located on the east bank of the river, about 20 miles north of modern-day Chicago. The town occupied a promontory overlooking the river, and its inhabitants were known as the "Cahokians" or "Hennepinians." The first Europeans to visit Cahokia were French colonists in 1672, who named it after Claude d'Iberville, captain of a French trading vessel captained by Pierre Lesueur. At that time, Cahokia lay within present-day Michigan State University's boundaries. In 1779, English explorer John Fitch discovered and named Cahokia after his friend and mentor George Rogers Clark. In 1834–35, James K. Polk led United States forces during the 1836 Invasion of Mexico when he became President of the United States; during this invasion he assigned General Zachary Taylor to lead an army composed mostly of Native Americans into Mexico City to capture Santa Anna. When General Taylor reached Mexico City on September 14th, 1837, he found that Santa Anna had evacuated most of his men to Tlalpan (modern day México City), leaving only a small force remaining at Cahokia under Aztec leader Montezuma II. On October 5th General Taylor destroyed part of Tlalpan with artillery in order to prevent its collapse and allow for a rapid assault on Monterrey which would finally achieve Mexican independence from Spain. On November 10th general Taylor entered Monterrey and took Santa Anna prisoner without combatant casualties;behind him lay Spanish territory completely independent from Spain following their victory over Burgos at San Jacinto on October 26th eighteen months earlier. On December 1st 1837 General Taylor issued an order appointing Major John Prentice as commander general's guard at Fort Dearborn where he remained until March 4th 1840 when he was replaced by Major David Dixon Howe; Howe later served as governor of New York from 1847-1849 before dying there in 1850 while trying to cross over the Niagara River into Canada via Buffalo harbor

Cahokia, also known as the Great Lakes Capital of America was an important city in the mid-19th century. Cahokia was one of the few major American cities founded in this period and it played a leading role in the development of Illinois. Cahokia was also home to one of the most impressive prehistoric ruins in North America, the ruins of Mississippian culture village Kaskaskia are located nearby. The city first appeared on maps in 1809 when a group of French surveyors named Charles-Jacques de Laclede visited what is now Illinois. Laclede described Cahokia as a "grand capital" with a largeIndigenous population and he noted that there were many buildings made from huge logs which stood out against the surrounding sandstone hills. The city quickly grew and by 1825 it had a population of over 10,000 people. While Cahokia played an important role in early Illinois history, its significance gradually diminished over time. By 1840 it had only 1,500 residents and by 1850 it had all but disappeared from map prominence. However, some historians argue that Cahokia may have still been an important center for commerce and culture even after its disappearance from sight. In recent years, archaeologists have discovered evidence that suggests that parts of Cahokian life continued into the late 19th century despite its lack of visible activity. This provides insight into both Cahokian history and modern day efforts to preserve its remains
Cahokia was a major center of the Mississippian culture, which flourished in Illinois from about 1100 to 1700. The Cahokians were the dominant culture in central Illinois and their capital was at Cahokia. They built large earthworks and great mounds that remain among the largest and most impressive ruins in America. The Cahokians were descendants of the ancient Hennepin people who had settled in what is now Minnesota and Wisconsin before moving southward to eastern Michigan, Wisconsin, and Illinois.
