The Marine Corps Deployment Gift History in Cahokia, Illinois began with the sacrifice of life on November 8, 1898. A detachment of marines from the 1st battalion, 9th Marines stationed at Fort Yates were called to duty to help quell a disturbance on the Monon Railroad. The marines arrived too late to prevent the fatalities and injuries that followed. As a result of their actions, service members have been awarded numerous awards and decorations for their sacrifices in defense of our country. Today, marine detachments are stationed all over the United States as part of Operation Southern Watch. In Cahokia, they provide support to law enforcement officers and civilians through functions such as patrols and crime prevention efforts. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the unit’s deployment to this community and we would like to reflect on some of our most memorable moments together. In 1992, a group of marines fromFort Yates presented Sgt. David Beasley with an award for heroism during Operation Iraqi Freedom domestic terrorist campaign. Ever since then, military personnel from Fort Yates have given back by helping contribute money towards various charities throughout Cahokia- many times it has been in partnership with local businesses who donate items or services for Habitat For Humanity projects or other local causes. One such event occurred earlier this year when 10 marines came together to give away 20 bicycles for free distribution throughout town during Cicero Day!

Cahokia is thought to have been built between the 8th and 10th centuries CE, on an important natural landmark known as "Thehorn" or "The Stone". The site has been excavated and studied since the 1930s, and its remains are now preserved in the National Museum of American History. In recent decades, Cahokia has come to be considered one of the most significant ancient villages in America. The Marine Corps is one of the most decorated branches in the United States military. The Marines have a rich history that can be traced back to 1775, when the Continental Marines were created as a response to British attacks on American soil. The Marines have fought in many wars and campaigns, including World War II, the Vietnam War, and Operation Desert Storm. They are also well known for their traditions and culture, which include traditional music and dance, holy days such as Christmas and Easter, and an emphasis on service to country. The Marine Corps has sent soldiers to all corners of the world, often going into combat with little or no rest. In recent years, they have become increasingly deployed overseas with new technologies like video cameras and drones. This has made them even more special - not only are they able to fight on land but also in airfields or aboard submarines. As part of their celebrations of marine history this year (2015), Coca-Cola is sponsoring a series of events across America commemorating marines who have served during wartime. These events will include speeches by generals from both sides of the aisle and performances by veterans from various units. This year's campaign coincides with National Defense University's 20th anniversary celebration of its partnership with the Marine Corps Commandant School at Quantico Virginia. NDU will feature exclusive access to key leaders within the Marine Corps throughout 2015 – making it an ideal opportunity for students to learn about how these warriors operate day-to-day.
