This led to a higher-quality product that was sold throughout the Midwest and South. In 1911, Cahokia became one of the first cities in America to legalize coffee production. The industry continued to grow during World War II when much of Arkansas was cut off from agricultural production due to war efforts. In 1857, Cahokia was destroyed by an Indian attack, but it didn't stop its growth. In fact, it continued to grow even more thanks to new methods of growing coffee that were developed here. By 1862, Cahokia had become one of America's largest cities and had become an important commercial center for coffee beans and other agricultural products. In 1916, Cahokia merged with nearby Mascot to form a larger city called Mascot-Cahokia. This move helped make Mascot-Cahokia one of America's leading Coffee Cities for many years to come.
Cahokia was an ancient village in Illinois, United States. Cahokia is the most well-known and significant prehistoric site in the state. It is located about 25 miles (40 km) east of Peoria, Illinois, on a small ridge overlooking the Mississippi River. The first Cahokians arrived in North America about 12,000 years ago. They built their village on a small island near the confluence of the Chicago and Des Plaines Rivers. The Cahokians were a peaceful people who left no lasting evidence of their culture or civilization. In 1832, William Speed founded what was to become Peoria as a new city in central Illinois. He named it after his Indian friend and mentor, Chief Ojibwe Captain John Steedman. Speed hoped that by naming his new town after one of his earliest American converts he would create a link between Peoria and its Indian heritage. The first white settlers arrived at Cahokia about 1840, when they came from nearby Moline Indiana looking for land to farm. By 1848, all of Illinois had been acquired by Michigan Territory under President James K. Polk during the Mexican–American War; therefore, no white men were living at Cahokia at this time. In 1850–1851 Lieutenant Colonel Ewing Jephson explored and mapped much of present-day Illinois for US Army Corps of Engineers; he named part of what is now north-central Iowa "Cahokia" after this ancient village in Missouri – probably because there was then little else known about it other than its position atop a small rise above the Mississippi River delta southeast of Springfield Plantation on which it stood originally (see map). Thereafter only occasional visitors continued to glimpse skeletal remains here until within easy reach by those with means enough to travel downriver each year or so for scientific study; thereafter only occasional looting took place before subsequent construction over ensuing decades destroyed any non-historic remains anywhere near modern-day Cahokia again! To date there remain few if any original artifacts remaining from pre-Columbian times hereabouts save scattered relics occasionally discovered washed ashore along river courses southward from downtown Springfield where artifacts have been recovered both recently during archaeological digs such as those currently underway sponsored by National Park Service & others thru various private organizations involved including some members & descendants* (*See website link below)
