Burr Ridge, Illinois is located in the heart of the Midwest and has been a coffee center for over 100 years. The town was founded by three men, George Burr, Elias Burr, and their families in 1855. The first coffee beans were roasted here in 1858. Today, Burr Ridge is home to more than 30 coffee businesses and restaurants that sell fresh roasted coffee from local roasters. Today, Burr Ridge is known for its comprehensive selection of beans and its world-class roasting facilities. These include the iconic Hilltop Coffee Roastery, which overlooks the Chicago River; the new Carr Street Coffee Studio; and the state-of-the-art American Café & Bar at 1111 W. Carr Street. The history of Burr Ridge's coffee industry can be traced back to when George Burr began roasted his first beans in 1858 on a small lot near what is now Elmhurst Elementary School. In 1903, he sold his business to Elias Burr Jr., who continued to roast beans here until his death in 1954. After Elias' death, his son George Sr., took over as owner of Hilltop Coffee Roastery and continued to roast quality coffees until his retirement in 2003. Today, Hilltop Coffee Roastery remains one of the most popular tourist destinations in town with its well-maintained facility and stunning views of downtown Chicago (which can be seen from inside the café).

At that time, Burr Ridge became a public company, and the roasting operation was moved to larger facilities in neighboring towns. In 1966, Burr Ridge merged with two other companies to form what is now Peet's Coffee & Tea.

The process of roasting became more automated over time and production increased greatly in countries like Thailand and Colombia before being phased out byroads like Argentina and Chile during the 1990s due to cheaper Brazilian-produced coffee becoming available. Since 2003, fresh roasted coffee has only been produced under license from three major companies: Peet's Coffee Corporation (USA), Hario Co., Ltd.(Japan), and Koffee Klatch (Sweden). These companies purchase bulk quantities of whole bean coffee each year from small farmers all over the world who roast their own plants on site using high altitude light roast methods similar to those used at Peet's Coffee Corporation. This allows for greater control over all aspects of production including flavor, aroma, color, bitterness, acidity and Further processing including grinding and packaging requirements which ensure that each cup is top drawer quality

In recent years, however, Burr Ridge's population has begun to decline due to increased suburban development and suburban crime rates.
