The National Guard in Burbank, Illinois played a very important role in the state during the early 1900s. The National Guard was first organized on December 15, 1861, and was initially called the “Municipal Militia of Chicago”. On October 8, 1862, the Guard was renamed as the “National Guard of Illinois”. In 1871, the National Guard consisted of 1,500 men and it had three battalions: First Battalion (1st Regiment), Second Battalion (2nd Regiment), and Third Battalion (3rd Regiment). These units served under General John A. Logan until his death in 1876. The unit then became a regiment and its name changed to the “7th Infantry Regiment” on July 1, 1881. This regiment fought in various wars including World War I where it earned two battle stars. After World War I ended, this regiment went inactive for several years before being reactivated on September 3rd, 1923 as part of Army Reserve Command at Camp Randall near Chicago.On November 2nd 1922, President Warren G Harding signed into law Public Law No 124-5 which authorized establishment of a state military reserve command under control of Federalist Govt ernment with headquarters at Camp Randall near Chicago to be responsible for all matters pertaining to national guard troops within limits prescribed by Act .
