In 1847, Mr. John Maynard started the first commercial roastery in Burbank. He roasted beans for both local and international markets. In 1912, Mr. George Peet started the first grocery store in Burbank that sold coffee products. The grocery store was soon followed by other stores in the city thatsold coffee and tea products as well as refreshments such as soft drinks and ice cream. By 1930, over fifty businesses had opened in Burbank selling coffee and tea products including twelve cafes and four restaurants which served up delicious java beverages from their own private roasting facilities. In 1982, Starbucks Corporation entered into an agreement with Jenrette Coffee Company to produce eighty-six percent of all Starbucks' cupcakes worldwide while Jenrette continued to roast most of Starbucks' beans ensuring high quality assurance for their product line-up including their popular dark chocolate beanuccino product which continues to be one of the company's most successful exports today. In addition to producing some of North America's best cupcakes, Jenrette also provided raw materials for many of Starbucks' flagship items such as its iced teas and doughnuts which continue to be made here in Burbank using only fresh roasted beans from our own suppliers

In 1939, during World War II, much of what is now downtown Burbank was converted into military bases used by both the United Kingdom and America which limited civilian access to much of downtown but did not affect business or housing developments that took place adjacent to those military installations including North Park Drive and State Street NW. Today many businesses still operate out of those buildings along with churches, schools and other residential areas that have been unaffected by the war efforts such as Near West Side which has become known for its high-end restaurants and nightlife options since post-war reconstruction began
