Burbank, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois. As of the 2010 census, the population was 149,811. The city is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. It was founded on October 25, 1848 by George Burbank and his brother-in-law John Strother as a small community on the north side of Chicago. It became a town in 1857 and then a city in 1871. The current City Hall was built in 1925. The Burbank Airport is located within the city limits. Chicago's first airmail service began operations from this airport on December 15, 1915 with mail sent to Muskegon Heights and other nearby towns via Douglas DC-3s operated by American Airways under contract to Great Lakes Airlines (GLA). This was followed by GLA's purchase of American's interest in Air Transport Service (ATS) which commenced scheduled passenger service between Chicago and its three hub airports - New York City (LGA), London Heathrow Airport (LHR), and Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG). These services were continued by American until 1973 when GLA merged with United Air Lines to form United Airlines. United Airlines also served Burbank from their main gate at Midway International Airport until 1978 when they moved their headquarters to SFO/LAX where they continue today as US Airways Express Flight 1617; however flights still originate from Burbank Airport!
