The first coffee beans were grown in Burbank, Illinois in 1847. The town was founded by Nicholas Fenton and his family. In the 1860s, John J. Simpson opened a small grocery store in the town and started making coffee.
Burbank is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 58,825 at the 2010 census. It is the tenth-most populous city in Illinois. With a land area of only .3 square miles (0.8 km²), Burbank ranks as one of the smallest cities in the United States by size. The first Europeans to visit what is now Burbank were French traders and explorers who passed through in 1688 on their way from Fort de Chartres to La Rochelle. They named this location "Burbank" after nearby Buisson du Bois, which they located on a bend in the river where it emptied into Lake Michigan. The first European settlers arrived around 1800 and built homes along Chicago's North Side; however, development did not take hold until 1853 when James Wacker began construction of his first artificial water main and streetcar line that connected downtown Chicago with Burbank via South Side streets. By 1860, there were over 110 residences and businesses within a 2-mile radius of Wacker's new streetcar stop on Poydras Street near Union Park & State Line Road (now Kirkland Road). During World War II, steel production at Camp Buehringen near Elgin led to an increase in jobs for workers at the nearby Du Pont munitions plant; however, Burbank saw little commercial or industrial growth until after World War II ended with the return of civilian life following Germany's surrender. After years of planning and engineering work by various groups including local officials and private citizens, City Hall designated parcels of land adjacent to Du Pont property as part of what became known as "The New Town". The result was an impressive rise in housing prices that has made Burbank one of America's most expensive cities to live in – surpassing even San Francisco and Los Angeles combined! In recent years numerous large businesses have moved into or significant renovations have taken place at City Hall Square – making it an exciting environment for residents and tourists alike! Burbank Sr., one of the original incorporators of Cook County. Burbank had a railway station on the Rock Island Railroad from 1892 until 1951 when it closed due to competition from other stations in the city of Chicago. The old train depot still stands as an abandoned building located near Interstate 75 north of downtown Chicago
