Buffalo Grove is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 7,813 at the 2010 census. Buffalo Grove is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. It is located on the southern border of Cook County and borders Rockford to the north, Elmhurst to the east, and Skokie to the south. Buffalo Grove was platted in 1846 by Nathaniel Palmer and James Blythe. The name "Buffalo Grove" is possibly derived from a Shawnee word meaning "happy land." The first settler in what is now Buffalo Grove was Amos Griggs who arrived in 1847. In 1853, Jno Coughlin founded a gristmill on Maple Street in present-day Buffalo Grove. On October 20th of that year he erected a wooden cross on Main Street near his home for use as an astrodome for fairs held at his mill site. According to one source, when Mr. Coughlin donated this property to the town it included “a magnificent grove of oak trees” which still stands today within walking distance of all three businesses mentioned above: his mill (now known asGriggs Mill), grocery store (now known as Pritchard's Grocery), and post office (now known as Western Union). There are many stories about how Buffalo Grove came into being - some say that Mrs. John Ahearn had an argument with her husband during an outing outside their home; another version has it that she simply told her husband that she wanted him to move out because she found out he was cheating on her with another woman; finally there's the story that after years of arguing over where they should put their furniture - Mrs. Ahearn finally gave up and allowed her son Nathanial Palmer to purchase all their possessions and move them into what would eventually become buffalo grove! One thing we do know for certain is that through hard work, innovation, sacrifice and family dynamics - BuffaloGrove flourished until its destruction by fire in 1955!
