The navy has been a major presence in Buffalo Grove for over 100 years. The city was founded by Irish immigrants in 1825, and the first naval ship to call at Buffalo Grove was the USS Constitution. It served as a supply vessel before being decommissioned in 1857 and sold to the Russian navy. In 1861, the Constitution was used as part of the Union fleet at the Battle of Chicago. After being decommissioned again, it was converted into a blockade runner and served in that role until 1865 when it sank off Norway. In 1922, Buffalo Grove became home to one of America’s first Naval Air Station Units (NASUs). NASU-2 operated out of this facility until its closure in 1959. NASU-3 took its place and remains active today. The Navy also stationed detachments here during World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. These deployments allowed sailors from Buffalo Grove to experience various aspects of military life while away from home. Today, there are multiple branches of the navy present in our community: The Seventh Fleet is headquartered here; NASU-3 operates radar facilities; and Headquarters Marine Corps has an air operations center here which provides support for Marine Corps Forces Europe (MACE) missions ashore. Additionally, several warships are based at NASU-3 including USS Enterprise (CVN 74), USS Keyworth (LCS 3), USS Wasp(LHD 9), and USS Arlington Heights (CG 58). Buffalo Grove was platted on November 3, 1827 by General James K. Polk and other Americans who were traveling through Illinois on their way to the "Great Lakes" region. The name of the town may come from a Creek word meaning "a meadow with buffalo." Buffalo Grove was named for two buffaloes which were seen near the town in early days. The first store in Buffalo Grove opened its doors in 1829. By 1831, there were six stores in Buffalo Grove. By 1840, there were twelve stores in Buffalo Grove and it had grown to sixteen by 1850. In 1854, Buffalo Grove became a village and it continued to grow rapidly until it reached its present size of 12,604 residents by 1870. In 1870s and 1880s buffalo hunting was an important factor in the community's growth as farmers turned to this activity for income during times of economic decline across much of America due to railroad construction and other technological advancements that made catches more difficult to achieve than ever before resulting in lower prices for meat products exported abroad.
