Buffalo Grove was first organized on December 12, 1836 by John H. Butler and James M. Ryan as a township in Stephenson Township. On February 17, 1847 it became a city when it was annexed by Chicago. In 1984 the city merged with Park Ridge to form the current municipality of Chicago-Naperville-Michigan City. In early days Buffalo Grove consisted of a few scattered villages that were connected only by water routes or paths over hills and valleys; but within six years they had erected roads and built several large frame residences; while some other settlers soon accumulation such wealth as enabled them to purchase land adjoining the great village site and establish themselves there as citizens." The Village of Buffalo Grove (later known as Buffalo Grove Heights) originated about 1830 when several small unorganized towns sprang up around Lake Michigan near where present day Union Station is located inChicago suburbia. These settlements sprang up because of problems caused by new immigrants - those who had come to America seeking religious freedom - who were not allowed to farm in their new home country because of Native American influences
