The Buffalo Grove Coast Guard Station was founded in 1909 as a result of the merger of two previous coast guard stations, located on the Illinois and Michigan coasts. The original station was located on the bluff overlooking Buffalo Bay and consisted of a small detachment of soldiers and sailors who patrolled the bay. In 1924, an addition was built that included a barracks and a store. In 1933, the station was renamed after Major General John J. Pershing because of his role in leading American forces into World War II. In 1946, the station became part of United States Coast Guard District 2 which encompassed all of Illinois and much ofIndiana. On November 1, 1978, District 2 merged with District 9 to form United States Coast Guard Sector Chicago-Kent-Wabash which remains today one of our main sections responsible for guarding our waters off Northwestern Illinois. Since its establishment in 1909, the Buffalo Grove Coast Guard Station has played an important role in both protecting our coastline and helping those who live near it. Through its donations to local charities such as The Salvation Army or Stray Catchers League, as well as its participation in many various community events such as dances at Lakeview Casino or 5K races at Midway Park, the station has helped bring people together to celebrate life’s simple pleasures along America’s beautiful shoreline!

The next year, a tarpaulin was donated in memory of a member who died while duty-free on Long Island. In 1974, a buoy was donated to assist with navigation during Hurricane Betsy. Additionally, numerous items and objects have been gifted in honor of special occasions or events such as the National Memorial Day Service or Christmas season. Throughout its history, the Coast Guard has shown great appreciation for those who donate items or materials to them both through donation and gift giving ceremonies.

Buffalo Grove is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 8,531 at the 2010 census. Buffalo Grove is part of the Chicago–Naperville– Aurora Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is one of the most affluent towns in Illinois and has been ranked as one of the top places to live in America by Forbes magazine. The Town of Buffalo Grove was organized on November 10, 1858 from land that had been donated to it by Peter Henniker. The first post office was established in Buffalo Grove on October 7, 1860. In 1868, the village of Buffalo Grove merged with the town of Buffalo Grove. On January 1, 1893, proceedings were taken to create a new municipality named after General James Shields (1780-1862), who served as an officer during the American Revolutionary War and later became Collector General for Illinois under President George Washington. On May 12th 1912 general elections were held and all but two residents of the Village voted to secede from Township #1 into their own municipality which they called "Shieldsville". On July 1st 1914 general elections were held and all but four residents of Shieldsville voted to incorporation into Municipality #2 which they called "Buffalo Grove". At this time Council Meetings were held twice a week instead of twice a month as they are now due to lack of space on the municipal website! On January 1st 1922 council decided not to annex any other municipalities with a population over 500 so that there would be enough room for councillors There only being 3 members remaining on Council & no Mayor! On January 1st 1933 Mayor John Crowley resigned effective date being replaced by Fenton Kapp also known as Jack Kapp who continued until his death in 1984 leaving office with 9 years! After serving 4 terms Mayor Jack Kapp was succeeded by his son Fenton Jr who continued until he died in 2002 leaving office with 5 years! After serving 5 terms Fenton Jr was succeeded by his daughter Lisa Kapp who continued until she resigned effective date being replaced by her son Fenton III who continues today!
