Brookfield was founded by immigrants from Hungary and Czechoslovakia on October 31, 1859 as a small town called Komárno (Komárna). In 1881, it became a nudist colony known as "The Hills." The name of the town changed to Brookfield after John F. Brooke sold 2,000 acres (10 km2) of land to be developed into a town center on which he erected an octagon-shaped wooden courthouse on November 15, 1881. On May 22, 1906, Brookfield became one of 102 cities incorporation in Cook County under state law No. 527; it had been organized as a township on April 4, 1885. Not until 1912 did it become one of Chicago's 25 wards when City Hall moved from its original location near Union Park to what is now Dearborn Street and Michigan Avenue in downtown Chicago. During World War II much important industry grew here including munitions production for the war effort; steel mills produced cars and other vehicles including tanks and artillery pieces; chemical plants produced phosphorous and other chemicals necessary for warfare; asphalt manufacturing; printing presses made newspapers and magazines; footwear factories processes leather goods such as loafersand shoes while also making corrugated cardboard boxes

In 1907, the village became a City when it merged with other townships within Cook County to form a new metropolitan area. In 1955, two adjacent townships were annexed into Brookfield: Northbrook Heights and Norwood Park Township (now known as Wheaton). That annexation created much controversy because these townships were not included within the original boundaries ofBrookfield nor did they have any voting rights or representation on local councils. Today most people who live outside of Brookfeld understand that these annexations happened because there was extensive land development east of Interstate 80 without any equivalent effort or planning done by either side – this has led to some criticism from residents who feel their communities have been taken advantage of by those in power without their consent or input
