Brookfield is a town in Kendall County, Illinois, United States. The population was 7,871 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1836 by John Brooks and moved to its current location in 1869. They built their homes near what is now the center of town on land that had been donated by Lucius Fairchild. In 1876, a post office was established in Brookfield and mail continued to be delivered by wagon to nearby Carbondale until 1978 when the Kendall County Courthouse opened. Brookfield has seen many changes over its history including becoming a bedroom community for Chicago while also experiencing population growth due to industrial development and suburban expansion throughout the 2000s and 2010s. The local economy continues to grow with several businesses operating within walking distance of each other as well as more than one hundred retail shops and restaurants located within five blocks of downtown Brookfield.
