Brookfield is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 7,901 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous of the seven towns in Cook County and the third most populous of Chicago's 25 wards. Brookfield was founded in 1836 by John G. Brooks as a small community on a stream that flowed through what is now called Main Street. In 1841, Brooks donated land to make up what is now Brookfield Village and named his new community after himself. The village had no school until 1847 when one was built by Mr. Fenton on part of the original donation land. In 1852, he donated additional land to make up what is now Old Brookfield Township and named his new township after him too. In 1863, General George Washington Hancock made an unsuccessful attempt to purchase 5 miles (8 km) of Prairie du Chien Lake from the Winnebago Indian tribe for $1,000 cash which would have given him access to their hunting grounds along the lake's southern shoreline. This event led to increased settlements near Lake Michigan due to fears that Chicago would gain control of this valuable water source if it were not secured by either France or Great Britain. The first post office was established in Brookfield in 1865 and was called "Pleasant Hill". It operated under American Mail Service contracts until 1893 when it became a Ulysses S Grant Post Office with its own ZIP code (62002). One year later, it merged with other Grant post offices located nearby into one large postal district called North Side Post Offices District No 2 which included all but three of Chicago's 25 wards including Brookfield where mail service continued uninterrupted until 1984 when all but one building in town closed down due to lack of customers or competition from local Delivery Menagers companies such as DHL who delivered packages directly to homes instead of sending them through mailboxes

The village of Brookfield was founded in 1853 by the Reverend Samuel Morse and his wife, Maria. The Village was named after a stream that ran through it. In 1865, the village was incorporated as a town. In 1898, the village of Brookfield merged with the adjacent town of Danville to form an enlarged city known as Danville-Brookfield.
