Brookfield is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 87 at the 2010 census. Brookfield is located on the west side of Chicago and is bordered by the neighborhoods of Gresham to the north, West Side Village to the east, and Englewood to the south. It has a small but affluent downtown area with several large department stores and restaurants as well as smaller businesses. The name "Brookfield" was derived from two places: one in Ontario County, New York, which was named after a brook that flowed through it; and one in Dexter Township, Michigan where a farmer found some white oak logs that had been used for building fences around his farm. Brookfield was platted in 1847 by George Wurtzel and others under the name of "Dundee". It became part of Cook County on February 14, 1851. In 1892 it became known as "Brooksville", after J. Brooks Barney who donated land for an agricultural school there in 1881. In 1916 it changed its name again to Brookfield due to objections from some residents who felt that "Brookside" sounded too similar to Brooklyn Heights in New York City

The first permanent settler in Brookfield was Isaac Davenport, who erected a cabin in 1795. John C. Smith, the founder of Sears, Roebuck and Company, arrived in 1836 and started the first store in Brookfield. The town was named for its location on the brook that ran through it.
