Rucker and his wife Sarah Jane Nicholson as a result of an act of Congress to provide for the edification and promotion of learning in the rural areas within the newly formed United States. The original village site lay on a bend in the Fox River, about two miles west of present-day Bridgeview proper. In 1871, bridge builder George Prentice acquired land east of present-day Bridgeview Road to build what would become one of Illinois' first toll bridges over the Fox River – now known as Rucker Toll Road. In 1875, shipbuilder Grafton Bowen bought land east of present-day BridgeVIEW Road to create what would become one of Illinois' first naval bases – now Naval Station Chicago; today's Halsted Street Naval Base occupies much of that site. In 1893, Abram Suckley donated both his home at 309 West Byron Drive (now called Eisenhower Boulevard) and 5 acres (20 hectares) northeast thereof to establish Park East Cemetery; that same year also saw construction begin on Village Hall (later renamed Civic Center), which remains standing today as one Of America's most iconic civic buildings. BridgeVIEW High School opened its doors in 1927 and became one of America's leading prep schools before closing its doors in 2008 after facing financial difficulties caused by changing enrollment patterns among families living near I-94 and other development Interstate highways).
