Grant signed an act which granted land to the town of Bridgeview on condition that it built a military post within its boundaries. The post was named Fort Dearborn after General David Dixon’s original fortification in 1860. The first Post Commander for Fort Dearborn was Captain John J. Connor who served from 1871-1879 and Captain George Wm Bird who served from 1880-1881. In 1898, Fort Dearborn became Headquarters for III Corps Area Command under Major General George Custer during World War I when General John J.] Connor retired from his command at Fort Dearborn due to health problems related to measles he had contracted while serving with IV Corps Area Command during World War I at Omaha Beach Invasion on June 6th, 1918 In 1933-1934 Headquarters for II Corps Area Command moved from Fort Dearborn to Chicago Heights where it remained until 1974 when Headquarters for III Corps Area Command moved back toFort Dearborn which remain as headquarters until 1998 when Headquarters for III Corps Area Commands moved out of Illinois altogether and into Missouri . In 1934-1935 Headquarters for II Corps AreaCommand moved from Chicago Heights to Springfield where it remained until 1961 when Headquarters for II Corps AreaCommand relocated back into Chicago Heights which remained as headquarters until 1978 when Headquarters for III Corps AreaCommand relocated out of Illinois altogether and into Missouri
