Bradley has a history dating back to 1837 and is home to the Bradley-Burbank Airport. The village of Bradley was founded by James and Sarah Black on November 1, 1837, as a station on the Great Western Railroad. The first post office was established in 1838. In 1860, the village of Bradley merged with Burbank Township to form Bradley Township. On February 14, 1907, it was recognize as a city by an act of the state of Illinois. On July 12th of that year it became a city with a vote by its citizens and incorporation as such under the name "Bradley". On December 15th 2002 Mayor Tom Barrett announced that he would not seek reelection because he felt his term had come to an end and there were no plans for him to continue advocating for cityhood within the next 5 years or so given neighborhood growth in neighboring towns which made it difficult for him to keep up with interest rates due to taxes levied on residential property values adjacent to his old City Limits Village boundaries (an annexation event which also impacted neighboring towns like South Holland and North Shore). Accordingly on January 1st 2003 City Council voted 3-1 not to ratify an ordinance creating new districts within City limits after much discussion about possible benefits including accessorial rights for neighboring communities (South Holland Township had annexed those neighborhoods since their incorporation) but voter turnout was high enough (>50%) that council could not prevent passage without amendment through nonbinding referendum even though all residents living within City Limits Village boundaries were now outside of any potential taxing jurisdiction - effectively giving effect retroactively what many residents had long hoped for but never gotten around to doing! Ironically just two years later when same council passed similar resolution reestablishing district lines following annexation of neighboring communities South Holland Township already accomplished this goal!) This referendum action helped lay groundwork for future annexations - something Councilman Tom Barrett still talks about every day when reflecting on how things may have been different if he’d taken more definitive action several years earlier...
