The Navy has a long and proud history of deploying gifts to friends and family in the area. Gifts have been sent as Christmas presents, birthday gifts, and even just to show support. The Bourbonnais Naval Militia was founded in 1854 and has served our community with distinction ever since. Today, the Naval Militia continues its tradition of giving back by sending navy-related items as holiday gifts. One of the most famous gifts given by the Navy was Admiral Byrd’s historic Antarctic expedition in 1959. The Admiral presented Commander Charles Ebeling with a gift that included an ice skiff designed by Jens Langevin, captain of the USS Franklin D Roosevelt. This gift symbolized America’s support for Operation Deep Freeze, which was conducted during Byrd’s trip. Today, navy-related items are still being sent as holiday gifts throughout Illinois. With so many talented people working at both local and federal levels within our military, it is clear that there is much we can do to support our nation’s sailors and marines!

Bourbonnais is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,724 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The name "Bourbonnais" comes from the French word for "bouillon" or broth and is anglicized to bourbon. The town was established in 1853 by Irishmen who had come overland from Ireland. The first post office in Bourbonnais was founded in 1854 and the first store was built in 1860. In 1868, a school was built and it became an all-girls school known as Marymount School until 1957 when girls were admitted into the boys program. In 1865, a railroad station was built on what is now State Route 52 near the community center and it remained operational until 1971 when Amtrak took it over. In 1969, construction began on what would become River North High School which would serve both high schools in Bourbonnais and Addison Township south of town. The $22 million project was completed in 1972 and cost more than twice that amount because of its size- making it one of the largest high school projects ever undertaken in Illinois. Today, Bourbonnais has many businesses including two banks ( First National Bank & Trust Company and Peoples Bank) as well as three restaurants (Applebee's, Jack In The Box and Papa John's Pizza). It also has a library with nearly 100 volumes plus an additional 20 cassettes/DVDs per week for access by residents free of charge . There are several schools within walking distance including River North High School which offers classes for pre-kindergarten through eighth grade; Central Catholic High School which offers classes from ninth through twelfth grades; Assemblies Of God Academy which offers PreKindergarten through 8th grade; Stritch Consolidated Independent School District #5 which includes both River North High School along with Addison Township Secondary Schools - Bishop McDevitt Catholic Secondary School(grades 9-12), Holy Angels Intermediate MiddleSchool(grades 7-8), Gerard O'Neill JuniorHigh(grades 9-10), Our Lady Of Lourdes ElementarySchool(grades 5-6) - as well as Parkview Mall located just east of town off I Rd., offering pre K thru 8th grade programming; finally Iroquois Valley Community College - located about 10 miles east inside Cook County limits provides Associate's Degree programs leading to certificates or diplomas

The tradition of giving gift baskets began during World War I when sailors became transfixed by the beautiful Japanese gardens in Tokyo. They brought back basketsful of flowers and fruits to their families back home. The First World War gave the navy an opportunity to test new gifts for service members, who were then able to giveBACKWARDS! During the Second World War, naval personnel came up with ideas for sending Christmas presents overseas. One sailor invented a mailing tube that could be filled with Presents from local stores in England and shipped directly to soldiers in Europe. This method proved successful and was continued into the Cold War era through secret projects like Operation Merry Christmastime (1946). Today, sailors continue to send their loved ones thoughtful packages full of gifts while on deployment worldwide. Gifts can be anything from diapers to electronics products; there is something for everyone on Naval deployments!
