Bourbonnais, Illinois is a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,856 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by French colonists in 1811 as Bourbonnais on a tract of land grant to Pierre de La Salle. In 1827, it was renamed after Pope Gregory XVI's visit to the area and its growth as a cotton-growing community from what would be known only as "the little village" has been attributed to his influence on both local officials and residents alike. In 1902, the first high school opened in Bourbonnais with grades K-12; it merged with nearby Blue Springs High School in 1964. A new elementary school opened in 1972 and was expanded in 2004 to include Kindergarten through Eighth Grade; it merged with nearby East Side Elementary School that year. According to the 2010 census, bourbons are produced throughout Missouri and Kentucky but are most commonly made here in McLean County where they come from several farms including Cline’s Creek Farms (Cline Distillery), Old Forester Distillery (Old Forester Distillery), Daniel Boone Farm (Daniel Boone Farm) and Stagg’s Tennessee Whiskey distilleries which produce three types of bourbons: bourbon whiskey (92% distilled corn & 10% rye), straight bourbon whiskey (93% corn & 13% rye) and double barrel bourbon whiskey aged for two years or more (at least 80% grain). Bourbonnais is a city in central Illinois, United States. The population was 8,859 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hardin County. Bourbonnais was founded in 1824 by Nicholas Bourbons, an Irishman who had come to America as a surveyor. The town name is derived from the French word "bourbon" meaning "wine." The Bourbons were among the first Europeans to settle in what is now Illinois. They came overland from France and built their homes on land that they acquired through purchase or grants from neighboring Indian tribes. In 1824, Nicholas Bourbons sold his interest in this tract of land to John Safford, another Irishman and surveyor. Safford named the town Bourbonnais after himself and set about building a courthouse, churches, and other civic amenities. By 1830, Bourbonnais had a population of about 200 people. In 1831, Lafayette College (now Loyola University Chicago) purchased some 640 acres (250 km²) east of downtown Bourbonnais for use as a campus. This development led to increased business activity and population growth within the town center while reducing dependence on out-of-town students for education opportunities. In 1836, local officials designated a square in downtown Bourbonnais as the site of regular elections so that residents could participate fully in local government proceedings without having to leave their homes).
