In 1851, one-third of the township's land was donated to form a parkland reservation for Chicagoans who wanted to extend their city limits into rural areas east of Lake Michigan. The town started off slowly but steadily grew over the years; it wasn't until 1966 that it had its first streetlights installed. By 1978, when Bolingbrook incorporated as a municipality, it had reached its present size with a population of 1,500 people. Today, Bolingbrook enjoys a diverse mix of cultures and religions thanks to its growing Hispanic community; estimated 20% or more of its workforce are immigrants. Bolingbrook is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Bolingbrook is one of the oldest villages in Cook County and has been around since 1833. The first settler in what is now Bolingbrook was John Wentworth who arrived with his family in 1833. There were only a few families living here when it was platted as a town on November 7, 1868 by J.P. Richardson. In 1899, Bolingbrook became an incorporated village and continued to be governed by a board of trustees until 1935 when it passed into the hands of the Village Board effective January 1st that year The origin story for Bolingbrook goes back to John Wentworth who came ashore from his ship after spending time travelling through various parts of North America on his journey home from England in 1833. He settled down along the banks of the Sangamon River where he built himself a small cabin which he named "Wentworth's Grove". He soon started married and had four children: two daughters and two sons (John W., George W., and James Wentworth). Unfortunately for John, due to European colonization all but wiping out Native American populations across North America during this time period, there were very few people left over from those days to actually start farming any Of their land so within five years or so of arriving here they had lost all their land except for some woods that they cleared themselves however these moved too fast onto other properties leaving them open to raids by friendly Indian tribes which happened quite often at this point especially because there were no friends among us...So we started farming ourselves again on what we still have today starting off with just 2 acres out side our house & maybe 2 or 3 barns; We would build our houses & farm out as much as possible before raiding occurred! By 1840-1850 most everyone had either died or moved away so we never really got ahead because raiding did happen though not nearly as often anymore thanks largely to white settlements forming up along the river like Peoria & DuPage counties becoming self-governing thru legislation enacted by President James Kenedy Eventually John decided he didn't want anything to do with this lifestyle & sold everything he owned back east including his cabin near Mount Prospect IL&moved back west where he started building an addition onto it which later became known as "The Manor" which still stands today inside the village limits next door to The Manor Hotel which used To be called White Eagle Tavern; In fact right outside my front door once you enter you can see evidence of how many times someone walked through that door! So I guess you could say that even after all these years The Manor still standing testamentifies not only John's hard work but also how much effort our ancestors put into making sure things Stayed consistent here in bolingbrook
