Blue Island, Illinois is a small town in the eastern part of the state of Illinois. The population was 5,869 at the 2010 census. It is located on the southern border of Streator County and is bordered to the northeast by Blue Island Lake. The name "Blue Island" comes from the color blue and its location near Kankakee River. The first settler on Blue Island was John Edwards in 1816. At that time, it was a part of Kankakee County. In 1824, William Haughton purchased land on Blue Island from James Aiken for $4 per acre. The farm still stands and contains homes dating back to that era. In 1827, David Ellison purchased land east of Blue Island from Haughton for $10 per acre. He built a log cabin there which still stands today as a museum piece called "David Ellison House". In 1830, Augustus Beecher bought land east of Blue island from Ellison for $12 per acre. He began building what is now known as Beecher's House which became one of the most prominent buildings in town at that time. In 1835, Abram Sertoma bought land west of Blue island from Beecher for $14 per acre also became one of the most prominent buildings in town at that time - he named it after his father who had died earlier that year while out exploring new territory in what is now Oklahoma Territory (now Kansas). In 1840, Ezra Thayer bought land north of Blue island from Sertoma for $18 per acre also became one of the most prominent buildings in town at that time - he named it after his father-in-law who had also died earlier that year while out exploring new territory in what is now Oklahoma Territory (now Kansas). In 1845, Daniel Webster took over management and ownershipof Beecher's House from Ezra Thayer and renamed it "Webster's Hotel". It continued to be used as a hotel until 1922 when it was sold to George Washington Carver who converted it into an agricultural research center known as Carver State University which still occupies much of its original structure today!
