Blue Island is a census-designated place in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 8,567 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The name "Blue Island" came from the color of the water on the island and from its proximity to Blue Island Lake which is also located in Cook County. The first inhabitants were likely Algonquian speakers who hunted game on the island. fur traders discovered this location in 1670 and built Fort Dearborn on what is now State Street nearpresent day Old Town Blue Island. They named their new settlement after Prince Frederick of Denmark because he had traveled through their country and donated money to build Fort Dearborn. By 1800, blue fever had killed most of the original settlers on Blue Island so a new town sprang up around present day State Street called Green Bay to accommodate these people who lost all their homes and belongings in the epidemic. In 1857, following approval by Congress, Illinois became a state and Blue Island became part of McLean Township within that state. However, it reverted back to its earlier name when Illinois joined again as a United States country in 1871. In 1912, following an act by then-Governor John Aiken (D), Blue Island was made an unincorporated community within McLean Township with full power to vote and make laws without input from township officials until 1970 when township status was discontinued completely and all powers vested in village formatted municipalities limited only to financial management issues. Blue Island is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,534 at the 2010 census. The name "Blue Island" comes from the color of the water on the island. The island was first settled by German immigrants in 1847 and was part of what is now Schaumburg Township. In 1871, Blue Island became a village when it amalgamated with nearby North Chicago to form the city of North Chicago. The following year, Blue Island's post office closed after serving only six months due to low mail volume. In 1899, blue crabs were found on the island and this led to its nickname "the Crab Isles." In 1921, Blue Island merged with neighboring Vernon Township to form Vernon Park Township. In 1930, Vernon Park Township lost its status as a township when it merged with Belmont Avenue Township to form north suburban Cook County. In 1977, because of budget cuts at local government units in Cook County, Vernon Park Township ceased operations and all its residents were transferred to Blue Island for three years while they awaited re-establishment of their township within Cook County proper. After being back inside their own township for two years they voluntarily dissolved themselves again in 1980 effective July 1st 1980 resulting in 1,534 residents living on Blue Island as well as 349 residents who had moved into Vernon Park since annexation by Blue Island some 36 years earlier
The first white settlement in the area was on Blue Island, in 1812. The island was named for the blue color of the water and its abundant Isles of Scituate. Work on the Erie Canal began on Blue Island in 1827, and by 1829 the canal had been completed to Carbondale. In 1830, Illinois became a state, and Blue Island became part of Chicago.
