The Bloomington Coast Guard Station has been providing a service to the community since 1919. The Station was founded on September 5th, 1919 as the Bloomington Reserve Fleet and was originally known as the Harbor Defense Unit. On October 1st, 1920, the Station became part of the Illinois National Guards and served under Commander in Chief Chicago until May, 1944 when it was transferred to General Headquarters United States Coast Guard. The station operated out of several locations over time including: old Quincy Market building on North State Street; Marine Barracks at 14th and Randolph Streets; and East Washington Armory at 9th and Wright Streets. In 1952, Commanding Officer Captain Harry H. Ladd requested permission to build a new station on 71 acres located east of downtown Bloomington which would bear his name. The land for the new station was purchased from John Auld who had been interested in developing it into an airport. Construction began in 1954 and completed in 1957 named after then-Captain Harry Ladd himself – Bloomington Coast Guard Station. After World War II ended, Bloomington experienced a slower growth rate until the late 1990s when it began to experience significant revitalization thanks to a number of downtown development projects including The Quadrangle shopping mall and new housing developments such as East Side Village and West Side Village.
