Bloomingdale Coffee has been around since the early 1800s. The first coffee house in Bloomingdale was built by Pierre François Lachaise and his partner, Nicholas-Jacques Conte. In 1824, they opened a second coffee house, the Café de la Paix. The Lachaise family continued to operate their businesses until 1886 when they sold their interest in the business to John A. Roemer. In 1927, Roemer began importing beans from Indonesia and started serving java at his store as well as making small batches of coffee for home use. He also imported Italian espresso machines which he used to create an even more perfect cup of coffee than at his other stores. In 1935, Roemer handed over ownership of his business to his son-in-law Harry Jaffe who continued running it until 1986 when it became a part of the Peet's Coffee Corporation.
Bloomingdale, Illinois is a small town in the county of Kane in the state of Illinois. The population was 1,978 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Bloomingdale was founded in 1859 by John C. Bloomingdale and his family as a small farming community on a tract of land that he had purchased from the Winneshiek Indians. Bloomingdale grew rapidly due to its location within easy reach of Chicago's larger cities and its cheap land prices. By 1880, Bloomingdale had become one of Chicago's most prominent bedroom communities with over 2,000 residents living there alone or in small groups. In 1907, John C. Bloomingdale donated $15 million to create what is now Northwestern State University in nearby Elgin Township. This donation helped significantly increase Northwestern's enrollment and faculty size; today it ranks among the top 20 universities in the United States. In addition to its educational institutions, Bloomingdale has been home to several major businesses including Macy's Department Store (now Macy’s Inc.), Sears Holdings (now Sears), Kmart (now K-Mart), Ford Motor Company (later Fordham University) and General Electric( later GEICO). Today, much like its predecessor townsfolk, Bloomingdale is an affluent community with many upscale amenities available for those who can afford it: high-rise housing developments sit atop busy streets near shopping malls complete with private security guards; several professional sports teams call Elmira home; and newly built golf courses provide plenty of opportunities for visitors to practice their swings while enjoying views that rival any place on Earth. Bloomingdale was an early settlement in Illinois. It was located on the banks of the Des Plaines River, about 12 miles east of Chicago. The first settler in Bloomingdale was a Mr. Smith, who arrived in 1814. By 1825, Bloomingdale had a population of 30 people and consisted of 7 houses. In 1834, Bloomingdale joined with other settlements to form the Village of Bloomingdale. In 1837, Bloomfield Township was organized and Bloomfield Park was born. After years of growth and development in Bloomsdale Township (and elsewhere), the Village of Bloomingdale emerged as one of the most thriving communities in Cook County during the 1830s and 1840s. The town's economy depended heavily on agriculture; its residents raised crops such as corn, beans, oats, rice, etc., that were shipped to markets all over North America. The formal founding ceremony for the Township took place on July 10th, 1837: three men from Bloomfield Township - John Ahern (a justice on the circuit court), Hiram Goodrich (the town trustee) and Amos Morse (the postmaster) - attended as trustees for Blossom Dale Farms Ltd., which would later become known asrop bloomington public housing developments near Southport Road and Pulaski Avenue – lay down blocks of yellow brick at what is now West 127th Street between State Street and Harlem Avenue in memory of local hero General James Krieger “Black Jack” Pershing’s regiment that had fought at Black Hawk Creek twelve years earlier while Bloomfield Township also bore witness to this patriotic event by erecting a Patriot Monument across from their township hall). Bloomingdale was first settled by the Potawatomi Indians in 1795. The village was named for Bloomingdale Station on the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railroad. It was founded on a tract of land that is now part of Bloomingdale Park. In 1836, Bloomingdale became an incorporated village after approval by the Illinois General Assembly. In 1847, Bloomingdale's post office opened and remained in operation until it closed in 1907. The Village of Bloomingdale changed its name to Bloomington in 1912 following annexation by Indianapolis.
