Bloomingdale is a city in Illinois, United States. The population was 21,746 at the 2010 census. Bloomingdale is adjacent to the city of Chicago on the South Side of the city and has a total area of 26 square miles (71 km2). It is bordered by Cook County to the west and north, Lake Michigan to the east and south, and two villages: Elgin to the northwest and Westchester to the southeast. The first mention of Bloomingdale appears in 1802 when John Blanchard purchased land near what is now Wicker Park from Major Jonathan Hyde for £4 sterling. Bloomingdale was incorporated as a village in 1854. In 1902, Bloomingdale became part of Chicago. In 1916, Bloomfield Avenue was named after General Electric’s vice president William Fenton Bloomfield who had been instrumental in creating GEICO insurance company. In 1924, General Electric merged with Edison Electric Company forming NBCUniversal which then created Universal Studios Hollywood which anchored several blocks along Hollywood Boulevard adjoining Highland avenue including movie theaters like Regal Cinema (now Dolby Theatre) and RKO Radio &Television Place while still maintaining many GEICO properties like its original home block on Cadillac Place called “The Empire State Building” originally built as an advertising billboard for GEICO’s purchase of Macy’s empire from James Kelson Macy Sr., one of America’s earliest department stores. One popular attraction in this wealthy area are Blossomfields – small gardens located throughout downtown that provide residents with fresh flowers during all seasons; each bloomery features about 100 plants grown specifically for blooming season; these vary greatly in size but are typically colorful annual flower baskets that can be found near City Hall or next door at pedestrians-only Fountain Square Park (formerly Dearborn Street), just off Michigan Ave between North Howard street and Woodlawn Avenue NW).

On May 3, 1853, Bloomingdale was incorporated as a city by ordinance. The population of Bloomingdale at the time was just over 1,500. It wasn't until 1861 that Bloomingdale made it its capital. In 1865, the United States Congress passed the Morrill Act which established the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. Bloomingdale's economy changed rapidly after this and by 1890 it had reached its peak with a population of 10,000. However, by World War Igrowth had stalled and by 1930the city had shrunk to 2,000 people.
