The Blanchards were natives of New York City and had come to America in search of their fortune. They soon learned that Bloomingdale was a famous gun market and decided to make it their home. The Blanchard Rifle Museum is still in business today and preserves the family’s firearm collection. In addition to rifles, the museum also has a variety of handguns including revolvers and pistols from different periods. One of the most popular items on display is an original Colt “Patriots” revolver dating back to 1881. It’s now on loan to the museum from Driggs Gun Store in Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. The store was founded by John Dickson Driggs in 1872 and remains one of the longest-standing gun stores in America today. The community of Bloomingdale was so important to George and James Blanchard that they donated land for a school district in 1892. That same year, they also donated $10,000 towards construction of what would become First United Methodist Church (now called First Presbyterian). George and James died within months of each other after serving as mayor and councilman for Bloomingdale for many years; this event is celebrated annually as Maynard Street Day in their honor. Today, there are over 1,500 firearms on display at the Blanchard Rifle Museum including common firearms such as shotguns and handguns from around the world. There are also numerous exhibits featuring historical artifacts from Bloomingdale such as old postcards or furniture from prior eras!
