Bloomingdale is a small town in Illinois, located west of Chicago. The population was 3,500 at the 2000 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. The first settlers in Bloomingdale were farmers who arrived in 1836. In 1839, Daniel and Martha Kapp bought land east of where Bloomingdale now stands from Joseph Alger and erected a log cabin on the site. They named their new home "Bloomingdale" after their daughter's birth place in England. The Kapps remained property owners until they sold it to Major General Winfield Scott Hancock in 1865 for $10,000$. Hancock was one of the Union generals during the American Civil War and later served as Mayor of Chicago from 1870-1872 and 1876-1880. He also owned land near Bloomingdale which he used for grazing his horses and cows. After the war, he returned to Bloomingdale and continued to live there until his death in 1902 at age 81 years old. In 1948, Congress passed the Bloomingdale Plan which aimed to improve housing opportunities for African Americans living within reach of white people inbloomingdale without having to leave their homes or lose their businesses outright or sell them back at a fraction of what they had paid for them originally. This plan led to the opening of such black-owned businesses as Woolworths (later Sears) on Forest Park Drive (now State Street) as well as many other stores over time that have helped make Bloomingdale an increasingly diverse community since then including several mosques and churches dating back to its earliest days as a Christian enclave carved out among some high school students during World War II when much larger cities were closed off to Jews by order of President Franklin D Roosevelt). Today, most residents are white but there are sizable minorities both Hispanic/Latino (25%oguish), Asian Pacific Islander (4%), Black (15%)and Native American/Alaskan Native (1%). Many residents still speak English as their primary language with Spanish being another common second language spoken by some natives hereabouts; however recent waves of immigrants from Latin America have brought various cultures together making this community ever more cosmopolitan than ever before - something that has only grown stronger with each passing year!
The Bloomingdale town site was laid out in 1814 by the Revolutionary War veterans, Timothy Blanchard and Nicholas D. Flood. The first permanent settler was Abraham Carden, who arrived in 1816. Bloomingdale's original name was "Bloomingdale Township." In 1837, the town was renamed to Bloomingdale after J.P. Bloomingdale, a General in the Union army during the American Civil War. In 1865, Bloomingdale became a part of Chicago; however, it retained its own government and school system until 1955 when they were merged into the city's public schools system. In 1899, the City of Chicago annexed all of Cook County including Bloomingdale making it an entirely independent municipality again with its own police department and mayor-elects. In 1925, Blossommore Cemetery opened on Commercial Drive adjacent to Blossommore Park which functioned as a community center for both New York City residents and those from other parts of Illinois until 1960 when it closed because of overuse and vandalism. It reopened as a memorial park in 1998 with donations from various people in Bloomfield Hills (now Detroit).
