The Berwyn National Guard was created on September 16, 1907 when the Illinois General Assembly passed a bill authorizing the state’s military forces to be organized into a guard corps. The first unit to be raised in Berwyn was the 1st Regiment of Infantry, which was organized on December 12, 1907. The regiment served as part of the State Militia until November 30, 1912 when it became an infantry regiment and deployed to World War I. After World War I ended, the regiment served in Hawaii and Puerto Rico before returning home and being mobilized for service in World War II. The regiment fought in both World Wars and earned numerous medals and citations. In 1946, the 1st Regiment of Infantry ceased operations but remained inactive until reactivated as an armoured brigade on October 15th 1966 under command of Major General Phillip L. Smith with Headquarters at 3758 N Prospect Drive Berwyn IL 62401. The 1st Battalion (Airmobile) troops were activated at Camp Beaumont east of Chicago on October 15th 1966 under command of Brigadier General Donald Aiken who had assumed command from Major General Phillip L Smith upon his death June 3rd 1967 after years of service with the battalion including deployments to Vietnam where he received two Distinguished Unit Awards (DUAs). The battalion deploys nationwide annually throughout summertime conducting concerts/unit exercises/ parade events highlighting their role within local community policing programs across America's largest city

The Berwyn National Guard Armory was established in 1912 as the local armory of the Illinois National Guard. The first donation of arms to the armory was a Winchester rifle by Captain John W. Fenton, who served in Company K, 119th Infantry Regiment (7th Infantry Division) during World War I. In 1928, the armory was renamed in honor of Colonel Edward S. "Ed" Flynn, commander of 3d Battalion, 14th Regiment (5th Armored Brigade) in World War II and recipient of the Distinguished Unit Citation for his actions leading his battalion during Operation Market Garden. The unit's motto is "An ever Ready Army."

Berwyn was platted on March 15, 1847 by George S. Lyon and Alfred Myrick, two pioneers from Lebanon Township in McLean County, Illinois. The first post office in Berwyn was established on December 5, 1852. It moved to its current location in 1857. In 1860, John Fenton founded an insurance company that became one of the largest companies in the Midwest and later merged with other insurers to form AIG (the parent company of Citigroup). In 1886 Congressman James M. Hughes served as Berwyn's first mayor and helped pass a city charter making it an incorporated municipality with a mayor-council government under which it has continued to operate since then. The town's rich agricultural history can be seen today in such products as apples, cornmeal mush and chickens that are still raised here today on many farmssteads scattered throughout the townsite and countryside surrounding it. Many other businesses have come and gone through the years including grocery stores (Jiffy Lube), banks (First National), Ford dealership (now called KFC) and JCPenney store before finally being supplanted by Walmart which opened its first local store here in 2003; also home to one of Illinois' only full service high school gyms/sports complexes - StritchFields High School - as well as numerous small businesses such as CVS Pharmacy and Sears department store until they closed their doors for good in 2009 due to budget cuts affecting mostsmaller malls around this area; however much like old homes everywhere else some young families have taken up residence over recent years having bought or leased many of these properties filling up what were once single family residences becoming "mini-malls" complete with restaurants/bars/stores etc.; all while keeping much of the character & feel of older homes still present within minutes' walk or drive away from most residents daily life activities!
