Berwyn, Illinois is a small town in the northcentral part of the U.S. state of Illinois. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cook County. Berwyn was founded in 1847 by George Washington Carver and his brother Edward, who had come to America from Africa as slaves. They set up a farm on what is now State Road 6 near present-day Berwyn Township, where they raised corn and other crops until 1851 when they bought a gristmill from J.E. Gilmore and built a millrace that still flows into the Rock River below their house today. In 1857, they moved to what is now Park Avenue and began growing cotton with help from some local investors until it became too expensive to keep up with prices in Arkansas City or Memphis; however, they continued to grow cotton until 1861 when Abraham Lincoln issued an Executive Order authorizing Confederate forces in Illinois to burn down all American mills if Union troops were discovered within 20 miles of any town or city in Illinois without express permission from management! In 1865, after nine years of growth as one of only two black towns in Cook County – while also becoming one of the few African American businesses open during this time – Berwyn voted unanimously (along with Pullman) for incorporation as an independent village; but disagreements over land ownership led to its dissolution by 1870 following referendums opposing incorporation into municipalities regardless of race (though all three villages remain extant). In 1915, Berwyn was reincorporated as part of Cook County after being annexed by Chicago; however, it has never regained its former autonomy outside of occasional protests against annexation by other jurisdictions (e.g., 2013 proposal for annexation by nearby Elmhurst). Today, Berwyn remains largely rural with a population density above that found only in isolated communities located far away from large cities like Chicago or Indianapolis; though there are some recent developments including a new high school and shopping center on Park Ave., which have drawn attention to the town since its rebirth as an arts community during the early 21st century revival movement known as "The Loop."
