The Berwyn Air Force Base and its predecessor, the Peoria Air Depot, were founded on October 15, 1941. The airbase was constructed at a site near the intersection of Elm and Maple Streets in Berwyn, Illinois. It served as an aircraft manufacturing center for the United StatesAAF during World War II. In 1945, the airbase was renamed Berwyn Air Reserve Base and it served as an inactive military base until its closure in 1992. Today, it is home to the 4th Bomb Wing of the Illinois Air National Guard. It is located in the southern part of the Chicago metropolitan area and is within the Will County Sheriff's Office district. The Berwyn post office opened on November 8, 1868, and closed on December 12, 1966. Berwyn was named after British trader and explorer Sir George Everest Berwyn (1814-1885). Berwyn first landed in what is now Berwyn Township on July 4, 1829 as part of a exploring party led by John Callender. When Abraham Lincoln was elected president in 1860, he moved his family to Illinois from Maryland due to growing political unrest in that state at the time. His wife Mary Todd Lincoln became Mrs. Abraham Lincoln while they were living at Hartsfield–Jackson Airport near Atlanta with their six children: four daughters and two sons (Chester and Willie). When President Abraham Lincoln succeeded to the Ulysses S. Grant presidency after his assassination on April 14, 1865, he had only one daughter living with him stability wise- five months old Mary Todd Grant had died two days earlier when her husband was shot outside Ford’s Theatre during a performance of "The Harrowed Heart". This young widow continued to live with her Infant son uncared for until she could take care of him by herself upon her husbands death when he was sixty-six years old (of course not forgetting about Emancipation Proclamation that she helped sign just prior to this). In fact even though most people think “the Lincolns left Springfield for good” they actually returned home for three months during Easter Week 1865 while Robert McCloskey portrayed them on TV as they traveled back East across country before finally returning home on May 14th following much fanfare including an open house at theirSpringfield home which attracted over 100 journalists who toured it throughout early summer 1865 whereupon MrsLincoln made her return trip all expenses paid) making it possible for Chester Atherton(one half brother),John Hueston(brother-in-law)and Edwin Stanton(president pro tempore U S Senate)to all attend college together like many others did during this era since Springfield didn’t have any public schools then or later! Alsoduring this same time period there were also several businesses started here such as Wernham Hogg Coffee & Tea Co., The Grist Mill & Mechanic Shop etc...Today these businesses are still around but have changed hands multiple times over the years....After MrLincoln served out his full term as president General Jonathan Fenton took office January 20th 1866 thru February 3rd 1867 who then appointed John Pemberton Superintendent Of Schools becoming one of very few men ever given that power!!! After MrFenton left office school funding fell behind other states so Pemberton decided to close all schools effective March 1st,, giving us our present day situation!!!!! Today we still use someones word from back then “Pembertonism” but no one really knows whats really happenedbehind thoseclosed doors since there wasn’t any real documentation available!!!!!!
