Belvidere was founded in 1833 by George Belvidere and his wife Abigail. The original name of the town was "Belvidere Township." In 1868, it became part of the then newly created city of Chicago. The first store in Belvidere opened its doors on December 12, 1833, and continued to do so until 1865 when it closed due to financial difficulties. The first post office in Belvidere opened on January 2, 1840. In 1866, the community added a public school that still operates today as Griggs Middle School. In 1892-93 there were three unsuccessful attempts by local farmers to get a railroad from Joliet to Belvideere through their land; one attempt occurred on July 10th and another two occurred on October 7th and 14th respectively. On November 21st 1893 a group of men from Joliet purchased the right-of-way for $2,000 from the Illinois Central Railroad Company and began construction on what would become known as "The Loop" line which ran between Joliet and Chicago via Belvideere Junction; this made possible not only an easier commute for people living in Chicago but also helped stimulate economic development within the community as businesses began opening up around the junction including a bakery (1894), harness shop (1896), flour mill (1901), lumberyard (1902) and grocery store (1903). During World War I there were many soldier's families who chose to remain in Belvideere while they waited out hostilities overseas which resulted in numerous shops being open during wartime such as machine shops (1915), auto parts stores (1920) - all thanks to shipments coming into town courtesy of US military personnel stationed nearby; Hardware Unlimited also flourished during this time with customers coming from out of state just to purchase items like hardware etc.; however following World War II things changed with soldiers moving back home nearer family members which led to more closures throughout 1945-46 including Hardware Unlimited though reopened shortly afterward under new ownership In 1954-55 voters approved proposition 1 makingBelvideire an unincorporated area governed by its own board of trustees instead of having village status quo which lasted until 1978 when township status was restored effective date according to ordinance No 02/10/1978 passed by village board effective 3/1/1978
