Belvidere is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is located in the eastern edge of the Chicago metropolitan area. Belvidere is one of nine towns in Cook County that are part of the city of Chicago. The other eight towns are Blue Island, Brookline, Carpenterville, Crystal City, Deer Park, Elmhurst, and Maywood. Belvidere has a rich history that can be traced back to its early settlers who were farmers and ranchers who started farming in 1836. They named their town after one of their farmsteads in France - Belvidere-sur-Loire. The first post office was established in 1839 and was called Groveville before it was renamed Belvidere in 1847. There have been many changes to the name over time but it remains an important community today with a population of over 5,000 people. In addition to its rich history there are also some beautiful things about Belvidere that visitors should take into account when visiting if they want to enjoy some peace and quiet as well as delicious food options! The Marine Gifts History Research Society (MGHS) was founded in 1984 with the goal of preserving and sharing marine gift history. MGHS has amassed over sixty-five years of maritime memorabilia, including ship models, paintings, sculpture and dolls. The society currently preserves and auctioneers marine gifts from all over the world. One of MGHS' most popular items is the model of a battleship that is used to teach children about naval warfare. Many other items on display in our archives date back to when marines served in both World War II and the Korean War. Some of our favorite pieces include an American flagpole that measures 25 feet tall, a lifeboat with oars that can be taken out for sea trials, and a set of battle pistols made by Colt Firearms Company. Every year,MGHS hosts an international maritime gift fair which features more than fifty exhibitors from around the world. This event allows members of the public to meet marine collectors and learn about maritime gift history firsthand. Belvidere is a small, rural town located in the eastern part of Illinois. It was founded in 1836 by Captain John Belvidere and his wife, Sarah. The first settler in Belvidere was Samuel Morse. The town grew rapidly during the 1840s and 1850s due to its location on the Great Miami River and its timber resources. In 1851, Belvidere became a city under the name of "Belvidere, Illinois". During the American Civil War, Belvidere was one of three towns that sided with Confederate States of America (CSA). In 1862, Union General Ulysses S. Grant ordered all civilian residents of Chicago to leave Belvidere; this action led to increased animosity between Unionists and Confederates in the town. Despite this political tension, business continued to grow in Belvideire during the war years. After the war ended, Belvideire experienced a period of rapid growth due to new industry entering the market. This prosperity lasted until 1861 when a tornado struck the area; this event caused extensive damage to buildings and killed many people. Aftermath of tornado: The post-tornado period saw some significant changes for Belvidere as well as for other nearby communities affected by the storm. One such change was that prices for goods declined significantly because so many businesses were destroyed or damaged。 Additionally, there was an increased focus on rebuilding following what had been done in Chicago following World War I}; however, reconstruction proved much more difficult than anyone had anticipated given both physical damage and human factors (). 1) Reconstruction - A number of challenges faced after 1865 tornados: physical damage from wind & rain; psychological impact from loss & rebuilding process difficulties 2) Urban sprawl - Lacklustration from rebuild led to increasing number of abandoned housing units 3) Poverty - Many post-tornado residents were unable or unwilling to rebuild 4) Greenfielding - Some survivors turned their attention towards developing greenfield sites
